Hello everyone. I live in Elk River and am thinking about going out on Friday. I am relatively new to the area, and have only fished Blue through the ice last year. Any suggestions on where I should try? Also, with a pregnant wife now, all of a sudden she is concerned with ice thickness and my safety. Apparently she likes my paycheck :) Any updates on the suggested lake and ice thickness would be appreciated as it will help my case to get out there!. Wherever I go, I will provide a report when I am done.

Thanks,

Mike

Well Thanks for posting @TheSpur There was between 5-6 inches of ice the last time I was out. Be careful along the shore lines as there are some springs. The spot between the points has been were most are fishing. I would look for 17-21 feet of water. Some hole cutting will be needed to find the schools of crappies. They have been hard to stay on top of as they are moving around at a good clip.  I would check near the sunken island  just off the edge. There is one by the points and one on the south end either one should be good areas to fish. Please post how ya did. PM me if you would like any other info.

Good Luck

I went back to twin lake this morning from 6-10am. 5-6 inches of ice and caught a few crappie around sunrise. Still slow fishing:(

I was out last weekend and checked the ice our of the south landing. I found 4" before the point on the left hand side and like what monstermoose78 said watch the shore I found under 3" to the left of the landing. I talked to a few that mentioned going  around the point on the left side, they both mentioned the ice cracking when they were walking out. NOt sure if its from thin ice or water that got on top of the ice. be safe and check on your way out. we did not fish blue at all last weekened because I found a bit more and more consistent ice on green lake where i checked.

I went out with our youngest on Sunday to twin lake from 9am until 12pm.  Drilled 5 holes in front of beach in  water from 8 to 20 ft deep .   Not much happening .  Jigging with waxies.  Ice was 3 to 5 " thick and solid.

was fun to spend some time with our youngest (17 yrs old now!) and still likes to hunt and fish with the old man ( I'm a lucky dad !)

there was a guy on an atV pulling his portable around on north end, not sure what he was thinking.

Just remember if you break through the ice, a brave cop, fireman or another fisherman is going to risk their life to try and save yours .   Use your head and think about it when driving equipment on 3 to 5 inches of ice.

I will be walking out wherever I decide to go on Friday. I appreciate everyone's input. If someone has any last minute ice updates, that would be great too. In all honesty, I am not too concerned about the bite. I just want to spend the day outdoors, it doesn't get much better than that.

I am sorry for the late response. This weekend was a tough one. First, Friday when I got home, the garage door broke, then my mother in law had car troubles. Needless to say, my relaxing weekend turned out to be anything but that....

As far as the fishing report goes, it was frustrating. I will refrain from saying which lake I went to as I got a tip from a fellow forum member. We fished in 14-15 feet of water and tried a variety of different approaches. We tried all different color jigs, different bait (minnows, waxies, larva). We managed 1 perch, and 1 pike on a tip up. We had the flag go off 3 times. Got the one pike, lost another, and there was nothing on the third flag. We hooked into a nice pike in the first 10 minutes jigging for panfish but it spit out the hook. We marked fish all day, but as soon as we would jig at all, it seemed to spook them. I heard similar things from other fishermen out on the lake.

One thing I did learn is that I am getting way too old to pull a 4 main portable house out 1/2 a mile. I almost died before I even put a line in the water :)
