upgrading from a showdown (which I loved, but noise and zoom buttons stopped working), to an LX-6s.  I have heard of people having issues with the latest software update and with the flasher graph jumping all over the place.  Anyone using one now with the update?  How do you like it?  I may return the 6s for a good old 5i, but am undecided.  Thanks!

I have the 6 with the latest update for that unit and no issues.

hey hoppe:

how is the machine in shallow water conditions?  Lets say 5fow.

I do not think I have ever used it that shallow, I have an underwater camera when I fish that shallow.  I would say once I get to about 8 ft I usually make the switch, but up to that point it works great.  I set the depth manually at that point as well to eliminate the bottom jumping issue, that seems to take care of the problem.

I have had LX 6 for the last two years and love the unit. As hoppe says though I never fish in that shallow of water so cannot help there. No problems with the latest upgrade, just followed instructions. My only beef with the unit is the morfidyte carrying case.

What is the update and how do I get and load it??

update and directions are on the marcum website.

I used one for a season, it tended to jump around a bit on occasion. I never did figure out what caused it to do that or what the trigger was, but the solution was to power down and back up again. It was really annoying. Other than that it was a pretty fun unit to run, lots of display options and the screen is easy to read. The only reason I switched to a Bird was that my friends hated to fish with me because of how it would mess their units up with interference. Yeah, I'm friendly like that lol

How are those MarCum's working for you?

Posted

Those bigger i-series flashers are intriguing, the bigger display coupled with Marcum's sharpness should make for a killer unit.

I have an LX-7 and just did latest update and have had 0 issues. There is a lot more adjustment in regards to the sensitivity. I can pick up a small jig starting at around 2 to 2 1/2 ft under the transducer, and that's without trying to adjust it anymore than usual. I never fish that shallow anyway. The resolution seems a little crisper also.

I had the showdown as a hole hopping sonar but found I used my LX5 a lot more.  I went to the 7 and did not like it because it was bulky and hard to get used to both hopping holes and room inside one man Frabile.  Sold the 7 and bought another LX5 and do not see me going back to any other.  I have a wheel house and found is the only time I used the 7.  If you do a lot of fishing outside and like to move around.  I would stick with the 5, I now own two of them and don't see me using anything else.

I have the 6 I had it bounce around every once in awhile but that was before the update now it works perfect.....

I've been in as shallow water as 6 so far with no issue

Has anyone else found the flasher to have a delay to its response? As compared to say a vexilar?

Posted

Nope, If you jig you see the response on the screen at the same time you are moving the line... Had a LX7 for years and would not switch back to a regular flasher unit, except when fishing with my wife, then she gets the 7 and I get the old one...

I bought the LX9 the same year they came out and love it.  I usually drill my 2 holes about 18" apart and can watch both jigs from the same unit.  I don't hole hop a lot so dragging it around isn't an issue for me.  I also don't use the camera too often but if I was in a permanent shack with a TV I would more than likely use it all the time.

I would recommend any of the LX series although I haven't used anything but my 9.

I've had an LX7 since they first came out and really enjoy all of the display options that it provides.  I don't hole hop much at all and wouldn't recommend the LX7 for anyone that does because it is a bit bulky for that IMO.  If you like to hole hop get the LX6 and you'll have the same abilities with more mobility.  Great units.  I've done the updates each year once they are available and the functionality just keeps getting better.  Have never experienced any jumping or delay in the display.

Does anybody run two LX7's in the same house?Loved having one. Having two has been horrible. Picked the second one up for my son and as soon as he turns his on we can't seam to get the frequencies to work together. Switched from 20 degree ducer option to 8. That helped some but I am really disappointed. I have a 20ft wheelhouse so we aren't sitting right on top of each other.

You can try this from the manual if you haven't already:

IR (INTERFERENCE REJECTION)— The Interference Rejection system is

designed to suppress competing return signals from other sonar units being

used within close proximity. When other sonar units are causing interference

to the display of the LX-7, activate the IR feature by depressing the IR button

located on the control panel of the LX-7. Interference is indicated by unusual

signals flashing or scrolling across your display.

There are 12 levels, or channels, of interference rejection. Press the IR button

once to open the IR window, now use the UP/DOWN buttons to select the

desired level of IR. The correct level of IR will be achieved when the display is

clear of display clutter. In some extreme cases, clutter will be greatly reduced

but not totally eliminated.

Anytime two or more sonars are being operated in proximity to each other, there

is the potential for interference. Deep water and hard bottom will increase the

likelihood that one or more of the competing sonars will experience interference.

Besides experimenting with different levels of IR, the anglers experiencing

interference can also try having their transducers set at different levels, going to

narrow cone angles, and reducing gain or sensitivity settings.

Posted

Heck I've hit every IR button combo between the two. They just don't play well together. This is too bad.

Posted

That's really odd, I have never heard of two of the same type of flasher ever causing interference with each other. Have you verified connections are good on both units?  My next option would be to call Marcum and see what they think and if they have any ideas.

Posted

We had 4 running together up on LOW this year, the only one that had a problem was the oldest LX-3, other wise the two LX7s and a LX-5 were just fine after a couple tweaks of the IR

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
