Rogers posted that a truck sank to the bottom, but all are safe. Happened East of them and West of No Name Road.

After seeing people pulling big tandems out past coned off roads and cross country travel and then pickups coming out it was only a matter of time..... probably won't be the last this season either. One guy I seen posting on facebook said 15-16" of ice 4 miles out....okay but he more than likely crossed a lot of 10" ice to get there! Fishing was slow for us 31st thru the 2nd. Tried 5 different spots with 10-12" of ice.

Hey Kelly, whats up with the root beer water color that magically clears up (some anyway) about 1.5 miles out from the Hillman-westwind area? Fish don't seem to like it!

There is no way a truck should be on the ice right now. I have been up all winter and there is not enough ice. We found areas not just one this weekend that only had 3 inches of ice. Use wheelers and sleds for right now. Some spots we had 10 to 12 and then you found that 3 to 5 in many spots. I actually fell through some ice about 4 to 5 inches before I hit another layer . It was just clear ice not piled up or drifted just a air pocket so have to be careful. The cold is coming don't rush it out there with trucks.

The ice was really shifting and opening up new cracks this weekend. We had many shifts and scared the sh!!!! ouf of when you house moves and you holes are in different places now. As we drove out new water on top and new cracks at least two from the shifting. We fished all day Friday - Sunday this happen at least 2 times a day you would hear a cannon like sound and feel the ice sheet move freaky freaky.

It could be still stirred up from before freeze up but I would guess that it is water flowing out of the Tamarac that has not diluted with the lake water yet. The bog is not frozen at all and still flowing. We have not been able to fall flood the rice paddies for a number of years but this year it was no problem with the high flow coming out of the bog. In my life time we have only been able to still be flooding before freeze up once or twice in November. This year there was still water flowing good at X-Mass.

In the summer time you want to get right at the edge of that colored water. There is a lot of fish food flushing out of that river.

I was up there last Friday and I have to tell you I was really surprised at all the vehicles out on the lake. I was only on 10 " of ice and there was 1/2 ton trucks out a lot farther than we were. Wonder what they were sitting on for ice thickness ?

I will not be up this weekend but my buddies are up there and still finding different depth ice. I do not think I would be driving out lke weathertite said still suprised people let them out on the lake or that they would drive out.

In a few weeks of some cold nights should be better.

  • I've been out two days in a row in blue thunder which is a 3/4 ton stripped down and both trips a mile out just over 11inches measured with a tape measure. This cold snap should make us a couple more inches that's for sure

Any good fishing reports it was horrible for us last night and 11 feet

That would not be fun although I love watching those recovery videos on the tube of U.

The old saying of a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work is true,  but today tested me anyways. First my trailer had a flat. Them my air compessor wouldn't work.  So no way to haul the ATV.  Decided to just walk with the snow free lakes. Get to my spot and my vexilar wouldn't turn on.  I had just charged it 3 days ago.  Caught all kinds of 3-5 inch perch. Tomorrow I'll fix the tire and compessor and get a new battery for vexilar.  Probably go to church to clear my conscious from my frustrations today also.😟  Still better than work though.

We’ve moved 3 times now.  We were too deep up in the bay according to what reports we’ve been seeing.  Plus this cold front has been a bit nasty.  Reports from people on Red were they got slower too with the front.   Pike and perch were fierce though.  Great spot to bring people that just want to catch fish.  But bring lots of minnows.  We had to go get more during our move to Highbanks yesterday.  I never did get to really explore the bay for the better panfish and pike spearing.  Too cold and windy to be casual about anything. we left there with a couple pike over 26 and some 10-12 inch perch.  The couple walleyes we got were 18.5 and 23.5.  I let the 23.5 go but maybe shouldn’t have?  It was the first one.  Protected slot is 18-23 out here.   Went to a proven spot out of Highbanks for last night.  Pike, perch and better walleyes.  Starting to get a decent bucket going with 17.75’s. Otherwise they’ve been in the slot.  They only bite when you’re about buck neked so only 1 pic that I’ll put here.  You’re welcome!

You would be remiss if you don't look at Vortex.  I bow hunt as well and I had a pair of Bushnell something or other and then upgraded to the Vortex.  Amazing how clear and lightweight they are.  I wear them on a bino harness and don't even know they are.  Mine were right around 200 bucks, but worth every penny.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.
