Otter XT Cabin

Question

Posted

Got myself a new Otter XT Cabin last night and the assembly was rather quick and easy. My only question is for those that have a new Otter, how did you handle the canvas trim? Did you screw it in or just snap it on and leave it?

Tuck the canvas under the lip of the tub and put the trim lock on. Make sure the house sits as you want when fully open. If not adjust the canvas as needed and put trim lock in and then put 4 screws in each side. Screws really aren't needed but the trim lock strips can get knocked off and wind will come in so I like using the screws.

Are we supposed to screw through the canvas?

The screws would go through the trim lock and canvas and into the edge of the tub. I have chose not to use the screws myself.

The choice is yours to make...

Thanks for the reply.  I really don't understand why Otter did this. Putting screws through canvas and the pulling tight seems like an obvious disaster to me. Quite concerned the canvas will eventually tear. Is this why you didn't use the screws as well? Have you had any of the trim pieces fall off yet? I feel like I would prefer to not use the screws, but would hate to lose one on a 20 mile trip across LOTW.

The trim lock should hold the canvas tight so there isn't a bunch of pull on the screw areas. I used the screws because I don't want to get to my fishing area and have knocked of a piece of trim lock and get cold air in my house all day. Better safe than sorry.

See my instructions in ice fishing forum.
