This is a pic from waseca Sunday.  MAN DOWN.  They walked out on 1 5/8 inches of ice.   This is what happend. I got to say you feel helpless on shore watching someone struggle for life.  They were smart in one way.  They brought a rope. Had the guy on the left gone down too this may have turned out very different.

Freedom! To be stupid!

Glad that they made it out safely.  It is a good reminder that we need some more cold weather before venturing out there.

No one is more anxious than I am to get out and drill some holes, but my guess is that we won't be fishing the Faribault lakes until New Years at the soonest.

The temperatures between Christmas and New Year's look good for making ice in SC Minnesota...but those same forecasts call for snow/wintry mix/"ice pellets" on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

A couple inches of snow on top of an inch or so of less-than-great new ice could slow down or stop ice-making, even though the temps are predicted to stay below freezing in the Mankato-Waseca-Faribault area after Xmas weekend.

If you do get several inches of snow or sleet early next week, the best case might be for it to turn to slush on top of the new ice, and then freeze. That would be better than a couple inches of dry snow sitting on top of an inch of ice.

I stopped down and talked to them shortly before that happened. Yes, it was pretty damn stupid, but they were trying to be careful. They did have rope, plywood, hammers, and spikes. Glad they were safe but they knew they were pushing there luck!

Sounds to me like they knew the ice wasn't safe and Planned to go Swimming. Hope we don't have another forum on our hands about putting emergency personnel at risk . LOL     Welcome Frogwizard

Thanks for having me. They knew very well the ice was not safe. I can't speak to much for them because all I know of them is a 15 min conversation at the launch that morning. But they were taking "precautions".

Wow! Stay safe out there guys, fortunately they were smart enough to bring out safety equipment but the lakes have not been locked up long enough to be venturing out just yet around the south metro. Glad they got out safe.

Where is Shieldsville located ?

Posted

Just west of Faribault.  It is just a blip on the map.  One gas station with bait, one bar, one church and multiple lakes.

Spent a lot of time around there in younger years. My buddy has a cabin on Shield Lake first cabin on the right of the north boat launch if I remember? Learn to Duck hunt on that lake with him and his dad. Great times.
