I finally got out onto Vermilion this afternoon to check the ice and maybe do a little walleye fishing!

We found 8 inches of ice where we went. 4 inches of decent ice on the bottom with 4 inches of white slush ice on top.

Small amount of slush close to shore where the snow had drifted but otherwise good walking.

We fished 15.5 foot depth with a sand bottom next to a rock pile.

No bites at all until 3:45 pm. Then we managed to ice 6 walleyes by 4:30 pm., at which time they just shut down.

We released 3 fish that were 12.5 inch fish and we kept 3 that were 14 inches.

Almost all were caught on jigging spoons baited with a small minnow head. Also got a couple on a dead stick with a plain pink hook and a small minnow.

Great to be back out fishing!

Spent the weekend out of McKinley with Cliff, BD110 and Ripstick. The bite was slow but I did manage fish. Key was small golden shiners 4" off bottom with a small glow jig. Deadstick caught 80% of my fish. Got 9 1st day and only 7 the second. Biggest was 22" and a few of the 10-12"ers that went back. Kept fish 14 to 16".

Jigging would bring fish in but they wouldn't hit much but they would usually find the deadstick and hit that. Lost a few heavy fish on the deadstick. Fish were not aggressive at all.

Hoping to be back thurs/Friday and hope the snow is light and we get some sun off and on.

Got out again this morning.

Good bite between 9:00am and 10:15am.

Iced 9 walleyes, kept 4 nice ones between 14-1/2" and 16". Released 4 more that I could have kept and a small one.

Missed at least that many more because of short, light bites.

Best jig was a glow dark pink Bro's Bug with a crappie minnow. Also caught a few on the Rattle Reel with the same jig/minnow combo on it.

Yup small and slow was key cliff. Some consistant weather would sure help. Some sun wouldnt hurt either.
