Thank You for the update Cliff.

Thanks for the update, Cliff.  I am going out from McKinley Park tomorrow morning and give it a try.

Let us know how the ice is out of McKinley please

Posted

Fished close to the same area today. Only had 6 inches of solid ice there.

Iced 4 walleyes and only kept 2 tonight.

Thanks for the info Cliff , Stay safe !!!

I punched a couple holes Sunday and found about an inch of ice under two inches of frozen crusty snow/slush, many areas just iced over Friday the 18th.

If you venture out on the ice be careful.:2c:

Great to see you're out on Vermilion Cliff! I was up there on the 11th and 12th and Big Bay was still wide open. I saw the forecast has been colder up there and thankfully the snow wasn't as bad as initially predicted! I'll be up there again on 1/8/16 and am looking forward to getting out on V.

Great Fish , Stay safe out there my friend.

Hi  my family and I are headed to Tower and could someone recommend a good place to buy bait ?  We will try to fish McKinley area-anyone going out this afternoon/evening? This is our first time to Vermilion.  Thanks for any help!

The Fuel and Food in Tower sells bait.

The Y-Store 5 miles South of Tower on Hwy. 169 also has bait.

Nice walleye!

Good report! I have not been out that way yet so glad to know what I will be dealing with when I get out there.

Saw a high of 8 degrees in the Sunday forecast with below zero lows.  A welcome sight.

Nice fish JL!  Looks like we're getting there. I've been out on the big V a couple times now but it's still at least a little sketchey. Wouldn't feel comfortable out there on a wheeler yet, sure it will happen in a bit that people will try. Rained last night... what!

Was up for family Christmas celebration today and saw only one group of anglers out from McKinley Park.

Last Monday I also checked out Pike Bay where it enters Big Bay and the ice looked worse there than at McKinley Park.  The ice had opened up there since 2 weeks before when I was there, then refroze.  Somebody had tried to walk out from my cousins cabin there and it looked like their 2nd step went through the ice so they turned back.  There were two permanent houses out by the small island in that area, and it looked like at least one of them was sinking into the lake.  Hopefully that is not the case.

The ice is very marginal and the weather hasn't been cold recently so be careful out there.  I will be back up on December 30-January 1 to try again.

Nice fish Cliff , Great report and please stay safe.  Keep us updated please.

Cliff, nice fish.  Thanks for the update.  I am coming up tomorrow, 2 days earlier than I first planned.  Hope I have as good fishing as you had.

Any ice reports for Head O Lakes and Wakemup? If Big Bay is 7" out to 1/2 mile then I feel a little better.

Awesome Cliff! Time of day matter today?

Nice catching Cliff! We have been just east of McKinley Bay with no luck for the last 3 days.  With only 2 days left, do you think you could tell us the boat launch area where you walked out from on Big Bay? Or a hot spot over by McKinley? Thanks so much, signed Desperate! lol                                                                                                                                                    Cindy Morrison

Any significant wheeler or sled action going on out there yet?

The late evening bite was best.

Cindy,

Straight NW out of McKinley towards Ely or Birch Island. Find at least 15' depths. 27' has been my best depths. Early morning or 2:00pm to dark is the best time.

Saw a few wheelers out as far as Birch Island today.

Cliff  We ended up close to Ely and Birch this am actually.  My nephew got a wallleye and perch, others blanked out.  Moved back east of McKinley and I hooked my first fish but lost it before getting it out of the hole. Both spots were 26 to 27 ' range. will be out bright and early again tomorrow. Thanks for replying!

My son was all over these areas with snowmobile today- no problems

We had a little slower bite yesterday afternoon. Maybe the East wind factor??

We did manage to ice around 10 walleyes and my friend kept 4 nice fish for supper!

Smaller chubs on a 1/8 oz jigging spoon or on a dead stick caught all of the fish again. Gold or pink was the best color.

I didn't have much luck Monday, either.  In the AM I fished the same spot as the previous week and didn't have a bite.  In the afternoon I moved out from McKinley Park bay and caught 10" and 21" walleyes along with a small perch and 26" northern.  Fished the same spot the next 1½ days and caught 12 more walleyes.  No slot fish, but 5 were 14"-18".  Also lost 3 at the hole, including a couple of 17" walleyes.  The best time was 2-5pm yesterday when I caught 6 walleyes.  All fish caught in 20 FOW with small chubs on plain hooks.

I also found 7" of solid ice in Big Bay with 2" of light snow on top.  I expect all of Big Bay would have similar ice.  Lots of 4-wheelers running around.  Two permanent fish houses were moved out to Birch Island yesterday.  The holes I drilled yesterday refroze 1½" thick, so I think that the ice is building fairly well (but not at that rate).  Still have to be careful out there, especially around typical trouble spots like the west point of Ely Island.

Gary I think I passed you the last two days yesterday I was riding with my boy on the trail and today I was waiting for a friend to go out at the McKinley landing. I've got a silver Polaris. I went out and checked ice and wet a line. I used a tape measure and checked all over and generally around 7.5-9.5 inches, in most spots but not all I checked the top 3 inches is white ice. There are a few cracks that may form pressure ridges but all is in the early stages. There are several areas of rough ice where the ice piled up on itself. I drilled one hole off a point that was only 5 inches but it had 8 all around it. There is some slush near shore in protected areas and i never stopped in any of the locations to measure it.

Two of us iced 4 and missed 3 in the 2 hours we fished. The fish seemed a little reluctant to cooperate tonight as we saw lots but most near last light. Was nice to get out.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters still in full swing offering both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite in February has been excellent, with lots of fish being caught and plenty of opportunities for fresh fish fries. Some ice roads are now extending over 20 miles out, keeping anglers on productive schools of walleyes and saugers. Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best late-season ice years in recent memory. If you’re fishing on your own, bring an auger extension, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure. As always, expect to sort through some smaller fish, but that’s a good sign of a healthy fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of time to plan your trip. Pike fishing never closes, and with the thick ice conditions, this year is shaping up to be fantastic for targeting trophy pike. March: The Go-To Month for Trophy Pike March is prime time for big northern pike, as these aggressive predators begin staging for the upcoming spawn. Lake of the Woods is loaded with pike over 40 inches, and tip-up fishing can be lights out this time of year. Anglers targeting pike should set baits under tip-ups in shallow water (6-15 feet) near pre-spawn areas, weedy areas, river mouths, or back bays. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even some crappies are in the mix. Suspended walleyes are showing up—watch electronics closely. Plenty of limits are being caught, with many anglers taking home bonus perch this season. Best Techniques: Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head continue to be the top producer. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well for aggressive fish. Lures with built-in lights have been very effective in the stained water (Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure, not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, continues to catch neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best; other days, the afternoon bite turns on. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and watching electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the best times for targeting walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head remains the go-to presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some giants being iced (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release). Safety Note: Ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, but they can change rapidly due to current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent throughout the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts are moving fish houses regularly, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies continue to be caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed overnight through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Pike season never closes—March is prime time for trophies!  Perch and crappie seasons open year-round Whether you’re looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, or comfortable lodging at a resort with or without a meal plan, there’s still time to plan your late-season ice fishing adventure.

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.
