Went and checked ice off the Sandy Point landing on Shagawa.  Found about 3" of fresh heavy snow and about 3-4" of ice.  There was what looked like an open lead off of Sandy Point. Might just be slushed out.  It looked to be going pretty far across the lake.

Some of the other small lakes in the area have 4-5" of ice.  The bigger lakes like Burntisde still have lots of open water.

They are calling for another round of snow at some point today/tonight.  Be safe out there.

Mike,

We got about 5" to 6" of heavy, wet, sloppy snow in Tower last night and today. Still snowing some and more expected for the next couple of days. Bummer! :(

Forecast shows a couple degrees below zero this week to. Would have made some good ice without this snow!

Checked off Sandy point again on Shags.  The landing was slushed out pretty bad.  There was a hard layer of crust then about 4in of slush then the ice.  The open lead looked like it got wider.  I'v heard/seen that other lakes in the area have big slush pockets popping up.  We have a couple cold nights ahead but I'm not sure it will be enough to firm things up.  Hopefully it locks up!

Found some fishable ice on Shags today.  Caught a few dinks.  Nothing special.  Ice thickness is all over the place.  All depends on where the slush froze up.  Some areas had 8in, others had 4in and some areas are still wide open.  Got to play it real safe out there.

Thanks for the report Mike.  I'm heading up next Tuesday for a couple days.  Sounds like Rob is busy but I'll PM you with my plans.

Wondering if anyone has any update on where Burntside ice is at, whether it be at Van Vac, Passi road or up in the North Arm.

Hoping there will be "sled-able" ice for opener.    Mike, GO, chaffmj..... anyone?  :)

Mike is right.  There is probably 4-6" off Van Vac now.  They are forecasting a little snow later in the week then it looks like its gonna get cold.  I would think there will be more than enough ice for sleds.  Might be enough for trucks.

Thanks guys!!  That's what I wanted to hear!

Looks like some ice making weather starting Saturday night!!   If you see an Arctic Cat 2 up with an old green Otter out, that will be me.

Just check often as the conditions I found over the weekend was a little unnerving as you could have 6" here and 30 ft away it could be 3 ".  Stay safe and fish well.

Checked Burntside off the Van Vac landing yesterday morning.  I measured with a tape measure and found 6-9" of good ice.  It varied a lot.  Almost every hole was different.  Wouldn't be surprised if there are areas with less ice. Between islands and back in the bays where there is more snow.  There is just enough snow on the lake to insulate it from the cold temps we had.

Thanks for the report Mike!

The plan was to come up for the day on Sunday with my son, but with the temps and wind chill that is coming in this weekend, I've decided to put my trout opener off til next weekend.

Too many things can go wrong with those temps and  -30+ wind chills (had my 20# tank freeze up a few years ago on a day trip, no fun) and a 4 hour round trip.

Good luck to all who hit the lake this weekend, and we'll be up next Sat.

I was out today for a little bit on the snowmobile.  Found 6-10" of ice with 4-5" of snow on top.  The area with 6" was in between a couple islands.  Drilled in the middle of a couple of the basins and found 9".  Didn't find any slush but I wasn't by shore and didn't go back into the bays.  Didn't find any fish either.  Haha.  The snowmobile trail has been staked.

I haven't fished Shagawa in a while.  Usually early and late are best on Shags.  There are snowmobile tracks all over the lake.  Not much for truck traffic.

Fished B-side on Saturday.  Spent a little over half the day in the Dead River area and found 8.5" of clear ice with about 3" of snow on top, pretty much ideal for a sled/portable.  Had a decent number of fish on the vex but only was able to make one 6# 'er hit the ice.    Spent the other part of the day northeast of Van Vac on a steep break of an island and found 8" of ice with 5 inches of snow on top.   Marked quite a few fish with one good bump but no takers.  Back to Van Vac at 5 for the drive home.

What's the latest on Burntside ice/snow conditions?

A real mixed bag. There is slush, some spots with double ice, snowy areas and other areas where there is 12 inches of good ice.

Sounds like the good ol days when we first started fishing it around 10 years ago.  It was a must to have a sled or wheeler to get to the fun places to fish!

Last year we drove out with an ice castle and ice camped for the weekend.  That did have its own benefits but I miss the days when B side felt like a remote destination.  That was at least half the fun, even before any fish were hooked.

I see some are getting together on March 5th.  I'm thinking about fitting that into my plans somehow.  Good luck out there guys!

How did it go?

It happened to be my birthday this weekend and the family made plans to get together.  We did get to do some things I thought were fun and some good friends showed up to play along.

I was thinking at least today shoulda been nice.  Hopefully the fish were nice.

OK, just checked "The Bash" thread so I got an idea.  Nice fishin' Jerkinlips!

Thanks Wanderer.  Even a blind chicken can find some corn.  I've spent a lot of time on Burntside with limited success.  Was nice to finally hit it once.

Group of us are headed up for our annual ice fishing man-cation.  Little concerned about the warm temps but I'm optimistic it'll just mean sloppy/wet fishing with sufficient ice still.  If anyone is out on Burntside this week, would love a report!

Is the ice still walkable as of this week?

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters still in full swing offering both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite in February has been excellent, with lots of fish being caught and plenty of opportunities for fresh fish fries. Some ice roads are now extending over 20 miles out, keeping anglers on productive schools of walleyes and saugers. Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best late-season ice years in recent memory. If you’re fishing on your own, bring an auger extension, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure. As always, expect to sort through some smaller fish, but that’s a good sign of a healthy fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of time to plan your trip. Pike fishing never closes, and with the thick ice conditions, this year is shaping up to be fantastic for targeting trophy pike. March: The Go-To Month for Trophy Pike March is prime time for big northern pike, as these aggressive predators begin staging for the upcoming spawn. Lake of the Woods is loaded with pike over 40 inches, and tip-up fishing can be lights out this time of year. Anglers targeting pike should set baits under tip-ups in shallow water (6-15 feet) near pre-spawn areas, weedy areas, river mouths, or back bays. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even some crappies are in the mix. Suspended walleyes are showing up—watch electronics closely. Plenty of limits are being caught, with many anglers taking home bonus perch this season. Best Techniques: Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head continue to be the top producer. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well for aggressive fish. Lures with built-in lights have been very effective in the stained water (Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure, not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, continues to catch neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best; other days, the afternoon bite turns on. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and watching electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the best times for targeting walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head remains the go-to presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some giants being iced (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release). Safety Note: Ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, but they can change rapidly due to current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent throughout the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts are moving fish houses regularly, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies continue to be caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed overnight through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Pike season never closes—March is prime time for trophies!  Perch and crappie seasons open year-round Whether you’re looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, or comfortable lodging at a resort with or without a meal plan, there’s still time to plan your late-season ice fishing adventure.

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.
