Looking to try and find some Legendary Upper Red Crappie.  What area of the Lake and what guides that could put a group of four on some nice size slabs? Is the North side better? The Middle? The south side?

I believe he plows with Hillman's on the north side. Keeps his houses there too, I think. You might try giving Beacon Harbor a call as well.

I'm not sure if there is a good or bad spot out there. I know someone who had some luck last year on the east side, but crappie can prove to be elusive these days. In the last 5 years of heading up there for weekend trips I haven't caught a crappie, but I have really hunted for them either.

Agronomist,

If its crappies your looking for then my suggestion would be to look at March (post walleye season anyway) until the ice goes bad, and look at going out of either Beacons or Hillmans roads.  The trend is for crappies to head east as the winter progresses, heading toward the NE/east side and the spawning areas there.

If you are looking for a guide, I would suggest either Jonny Petrowske (Red Lake Remote)  or Tyler Brasel (Bearpaw Guides)

if going on your own, be prepared to drill fish move, drill fish move, drill etc.    Besides the crappies, there are also some really nice perch in the lake you might run into.

Talk to Buddy Hillman if you renting. If you're going by yourself go out of Hillmans anywhere from 3 to 7 miles out.   Was up there couple times last year limited out the first time 20 big slabs and the second time 32 of them for four of us .
