The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that only DNR-approved firewood may be brought onto any DNR-administered lands, including state forests and wildlife management areas.

Firewood is approved for use by DNR location and is not necessarily approved for use at another location. A list of approved firewood vendors by location is on the DNR website.

Hunters must keep the receipt supplied by the approved vendor as proof of purchase and as evidence the firewood is approved.

State parks sell DNR-approved firewood for onsite use. Unopened firewood purchased at the park can be returned for a refund.

People who camp in state forests may gather dead wood on the ground for campfire use on site.

Transporting unapproved firewood can quickly spread damaging invasive species such as emerald ash borer, which can kill ash trees they infest.

“With more than 900 million ash trees, Minnesota is a prime target for emerald ash borer,” said Sue Burks, DNR forestry invasive species coordinator. “Use local firewood to help keep our forests safe from emerald ash borer and other destructive forest pests.”

Minnesotans can follow these tips to keep forest pests from spreading:

  • Don’t bring firewood along with you on a camping trip.
  • Buy local firewood.
  • Don’t bring extra firewood home with you from a camping trip.
  • Don’t buy or move firewood that came from outside of Minnesota.

Visit the firewood page for more information on DNR-approved firewood.
