Yahama engine balancer

Question

Posted

I have a 5 year old Yahama 150 four stroke that is 5 years old. Has about 250 hours on it. In September I started hearing a  subtle whine noise at idle. Didn't think much about it as it kind of came on gradually. Took it in to a dealer for winterization. Dealer said the engine harmonic balancer needed replacing, $600 including parts. Dealer said some of these are going bad because the gears are made of a fiber material that wears and can come apart. If the gear comes apart  debris will clog the oil system causing catastrophic failure. The new balancers are made of better material and include an oiler system. Something to think of if you have one of these motors. That said I have complete confidence in this motor.
