ATV or UTV for Isce Fishing?

Recommended Posts

Looking to pick up an ATV or UTV for ice fishing. Would be to pull portable around and maybe a small Wheel house too. By small I mean like maybe 12-14 ft wheel house at most.

Anyone have an opinion on which is better for all around use on the ice?

I have a 2008 Arctic Cat Prowler 651 UTV, son has a Polaris ATV. UTV has about 14" clearance, ATV about 9" clearance so UTV is better with snow on the ICE. UTV does an OK job pulling my 12' wheel house around but I seldom use it, ATV does not have the 2" ball hitch so it will not move the wheel house. I seldom use the UTV with the Wheel house, I wait until 12 - 14" of ice and than use my Dakota pickup. I do live next to a lake so I go from my home to the lake. Biggest issue with either the UTV or ATV is getting all this equipment to a distance lake. Unless you have a Fun Haller Wheel House, you need two vehicles to trailer both the UTV and wheel house.

I primarily use the UTV with my Eskimo 949I pop-up. It has a large bed on the back to hold all my portable fishing gear, house, auger, tackle, floor for the house, etc. during early ice between 7" and 12". I don't use a sled so I cant answer questions about that. After good Ice I only use my pickup.

If you tow a sled, a snowmobile works best.
