Well, it wasnt hot and heavy I'll tell ya that!  Tried the breakwalls in McQuad and at Two Harbors, nothing but sight see'ers asking what I was fishing for, with, had I got any, what I was fishing for, had I got any, what I was fishing for, some more what was I fishing for.  After about 2-3 hours of that it was time to hit up a few streams and get away from the people.  Caught a couple rainbows further up the knife and that was it for action.  I think its too early, might try back in a few weeks before its over.  Hope to see a few reports before then though.  Lots of boats out.

Good luck out there.

Anybody have a report to share?  Heard something through the grapevine?  About a 2.5 hour drive for me, dont want to rely on a "whim" if I dont need to.  Sometimes that is necessary though...

Normally the lakes shore fishery comes alive along with the color. I'd say your at least 3 weeks out, unless your after stream trout. A week of cooler than normal temps can change things big time though.

What was the river flows and levels like early this week up there?

If your looking for Salmon in the tribes its going to be a while. Humpies will be the !st to enter.

As far as shore fishing that can be done anytime and its a matter of what the wind was doing.

The breakwalls do have fish off them but don't forget about shoreline and river mouths. In fact if your targeting Fall salmon you should be at a river mouth. Brighton Beach and Stoney Point are good for Fall lake trout but really anywhere you can get access is good too.  For sure be there in low light hours and even at night if your off the river mouths.

Sawyer, rivers seemed to be running on the average side, a little dirty.  Probably due to the rains last weekend.

Thanks for the tips Surface.  Yeah I figured I was a little early, I just had an itch to try my luck.  Will be back probably the last weekend of the month here.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was up in Duluth last weekend with the kids just doing the sightseeing thing.  We stopped at the Two Harbors Breakwall and watched a bit.  There were a few anglers, one guy at the end got about a 3-4lb Laker throwing spinners.
