Believe it or not, I'm trying to catch myself a White Sucker...  Anyone have any guidance where I could get in to some of these without just drowning a night crawler below a damn in the Mississippi?  Willing to go that route but would prefer something "different" for my first sucker.  Any good stretches of smaller rivers/creeks I could target?  Would a river be my best bet or are there some good lakes around with decent populations?  Thanks for any ideas!

I caught my first White Sucker on the Cannon River near Cannon Falls, MN. Fished half of a nightcrawler on a size 6 hook on the bottom, weighed down with 5 1/8 ounce split shot with four inches of space between each. You'll snag a lot though... try to fish slower pools, then try fater water. For more advice and tips, try the roughfish forum: http://hotspotoutdoors.com/forums/forum/64-carp-sturgeon-roughfish/

If you want to catch any type of buffalo, redhorse, or non-white sucker, it'll be a bit difficult now that other bottom feeders such as sheepshead, catfish, and carp are now in full feed. Try fishing in early spring or mid fall in larger rivers; you'll have better luck with less bycatch. Of course, below a dam on the ole Mississippi never fails.

First off I wanna say I'm out in central MN.Rivers slightly differ area to area.

My peek moments of catching suckers are usually in the spring...Summer time I'll catch some too.If I were you and I was trying to target a white sucker,I'd wait till next spring hitting creeks, any slack water or sections where creeks pour into the main rivers.Usually in the spring is when the sucker fishing reports start pouring in here on the forums. If you are fishing the river, just fish with that bottom rig that works for you. Many sections of rivers and creeks are very low right now.Not sure about your area but Id focus on other species at this time . That's just me.
