Been quite some time since I've been on here, my fishing time has lessened the past couple years with having our 2nd and 3rd child. Taking an overdue family vacation today to stay the week at a resort on lake Amelia. Having never been there, I figured I'd reach out to see if anybody would please offer some direction on the fishing... where to look this time of year or general techniques to use, even restaurant or shopping recommendations would be appreciated too.  Going to try to get my 8 year old and his grandpa on some walleyes or panfish, thanks.

I have never fished Amelia myself either so I can't offer much about the lake.  But to your question about shopping and restaurants, I would recommend looking at nearby Alexandria.  The south end of town just off the interstate you'll find the larger chains like Walmart, Menard's, Target, Mills Fleet Farm.  There are a couple decent restaurants in that area as well.  As you travel north through town you'll find the Viking Plaza shopping mall along with additional dining and entertainment options.  Further north brings into downtown where you'll find more specialty and antique shops.

Search out the Alexandria area chamber of commerce website for more details.

Hope that helps.

My brother was there about a week ago.  1 walleye, a couple BIG sunfish and all the pickling sized northerns you could ask for.

Lite wire tied to a 1/8oz jig with minnows on ultra light tackle could turn the slimers into some fun.

Mid vacation update... Really appreciate the info so far, it's helped the learning curve with the fishing so we've been able to sort through a few sunnies and have caught a couple northerns & bass to keep it interesting.  It's a beautiful lake and the kids are enjoying a lot of swimming, also have gotten some good pointers on food & shopping. Still going to try to dial in the walleyes or crappies out here over the rest of the week. If anybody has suggestions, feel free to send a message, thanks.

Couldn't hardly ask for better weather for a fishing vacation.
