Yamaha 8 started peeing then quit

Question

Posted

Yamaha 8 HP four stoke (2005) was started today with muffs. It started to pee, then when I shut off the choke it revved up and when I slowed it down to idle it stopped peeing. It never did start to pee again. Tried the throttle again but nothing, but I could feel a good pulse of air coming out the hole at all times, just no water. Pressure from the hose seemed fine because the bigger motor was putting water through OK.  Any ideas?

Just to be safe back it into a lake or toss a Rubbermaid container under it and fill it up and see what happens when completely submerged.

Did you take a bent paper clip and clean out the tattle tale orifice all it takes is a pebble or grains of sand or debris to plug it. The pee stream can be blocked and your motor can be getting proper cooling it is only for visual conformation that water pump is running. Mine has plugged before causing major panic attack on the eve of a Canadian trip only to find the hole was plugged.

sounds like you need to replace the impeller

First thing I thought of but the stream was good and when it quit I could still feel strong puffs of air, to me meaning the impeller was still working. The tube shouldn't be blocked either because then I wouldn't feel those puffs. Kind of confusing.

I was thinking that. Heading up to Kabetogama on Tues. Didn't know if was worth hauling the extra weight up or taking it off and leaving it home till it's checked out. I'll take It with and check it out on the lake. Anyone know if there's an alarm or automatic shut off on this type/size motor? Otherwise I'll just run it for awhile if no pee shut it down till fixed.

Did you try pulling the rubber hose off and blowing back into the motor and trying again?

actually that's what I think is going on but farther in the tube. The opening is larger than most and I did try some wire in a ways but nothing. I did run the motor in the lake for a while with only a very small amount of water coming out but it wasn't dribbling it was spraying. That kind of tells me the impeller is working. It's in the shop now so hopefully I'll find out soon what the problem was.

Check you manual and see if the Yamaha has a place on the back of the motor you can screw in a hose.   Newer Mercury motors have this feature which aids in flushing the cooling system.

It was the pee tube. partially blocked. blown out and good to go. I'll check it out soon, but it was tested out and ready to go. Thanks for all the replies. Hope maybe this helps someone in the future. I still wonder why I had air pressure at the end and no water. It's fixed and that's all that matters at this time.
