Who took advantage of the early (CPR) bass season this past weekend? Any big fish to report in the Metro? I hit the water for a few hours right away (early) Saturday morning and caught a handful but no giants. Plan to chase some bass again this week and weekend...

I was chasing bass on Saturday Matt.  Got my PB (length wise) 21" largie on a jig in about 4' feet of water near some rocks. They weren't jumping in the boat, but bit well enough to keep us busy.

Nice work on the PB! That's an awesome fish! My 3rd cast of the day had a giant blow-up at the end of the cast and I thought for sure I had on a toad... but it ended up being about a 4 pound pike that took me for a quick spin through the shallows :)

I did see a couple nice fish in the shallows but it was too late once I saw them... fish were very spooky on Saturday. Most of my fish came from distance...

As is my habit to avoid all the one-timers on opener, I hit a very small lake in the south metro, no gas motors, that sees minimal fishing pressure & has yielded up giant bass in the past. I saw at least a dozen good size bass in three feet of water or less, either on/preparing nests, or cruising aimlessly. Couldn't get a single one to bite, whatever I tried, they were very spooky.

But I'll consider it a success as (1) I love watching big fish in the water, & (2) while I've caught a few really big bass in this lake, I now know there are a lot more than I thought there were. And to judge by all the little 10" bass I saw frolicking on the weedline, there's another good year class on its way.

Maximum12,

Sounds to me like that lake will turn on pretty soon... things are staging/shaping up nicely from the sounds of it! This cold weather today and tomorrow will put a halt on things but it's supposed to warm up again later in the week which could set the stage for a good weekend if you plan to head back out there! We caught a lot of our fish this weekend on a wacky rig, letting it slow-fall into the zone and sometimes even deadsticked right on the bottom if you know a fish is present... might be worth a shot on your lake if you haven't tried that already?
