2020 Alexandria-Miltona area Fishing Reports ( Lake conditions)

Recommended Posts

Good post minnfish89. The quote "us sportsman should all be on the same page" is very true. Seems like todays sportman's worst enemies are other sportsman and it should not be like that. Don't get me wrong, it is great to educate people about the effects of certain fishing methods but it should not turn into a battle. Any way, I used to fish reno every winter and I haven't made it there for the past two years. How has reno been for fishing in the last year?

seen a 20" walleye landed, and a 30" pike speared yesterday....

i had one pike fly in right when i dropped my jig (tiny round head jig tipped with a little atom wedgie in white).i drilled the hole in about 3 FOW. i was just drilling random holes, and i figured i would try it anyway. the little guy scared the [PoorWordUsage] out of me... other than that, i have been out 3 times so far. and so far... im fish less... i wish i could find the vex =[

oh btw, i was fishing anywhere from about 2 to 4 inches of ice depend where i was on the lake. average was about three (thats just a guess though)

I live on carlos and as of saturday most of it was still open. The north end might be ok but the main body of carlos I dont think will be a go until next week sometime.

yes. le homme dieu has 2 to 4. and it looks like maybe 6 in areas that arent snow covered. the ice in gin clear. and you can look down through the ice to find drop offs, weedlines, and all that.

with the past 2 days, im sure le homme dieu is completely frozen over now. (government point was still open for a while)

and we could have gained up to an inch. maybe more.

How much snow is on the lakes in the Alexandria area? Just curious. I was fishing a lake near Duluth this past weekend and there was 12-13" there. Very little snow on the ice.

Is there any lakes that has enough ice to drive on yet?

i think it MIGHT be safe to start driving SMALL vehicles out. but im not sure. i know alot of areas on le homme dieu already have 8 inches. but i will check this weekend

i believe it would be a good idea to give it another week or 2

Merry Christmas, and we've gotten about 10" of snow so far, and it's still coming down to beat heck at times. with this much snow I wouldn't know about getting around with a truck. Not to mention I'm sure with some of the cracks I've seen on some of the lakes I'm bettig that the water is going to start coming up.

Can anyone tell me what the snow is like there? Is it fluffy stuff or is wet and heavy like it is by St. Cloud?

wet and heavy

went sight fishing where me and grandpa were last year.

the day started slow, but after a while i started to figure the fish out

this bass came in with a buddy. side by side, the first one hit, but immediatly spat it back out. then this guy got it. a nice, heavy little guy. alot of fun with 2lb test

PC250116.jpg

just goes to show, bass like the small stuff during the winter!

PC250117.jpg

jumbo!

PC250118.jpg

should have had another jumbo. but it wrapped in the cattail stems. and got off.

afterward, i caught a few sunnies and crappies.

shortly before the crappie came in i had a HUGE bass come in, easily 5 lbs. likely over 6. it was ENORMOUS! but i got a bit of an adrenaline rush and spooked it by jigging to much =[

i also had a big bowfin lay right below my hole for 10 minutes, but couldnt get it to bite. so i moved on, since the sunfish wouldnt come in while it was there

here is the final catch

Guess who's back...

Back again...

Jake is back...

kicking fin!!

i went back out sight fishing with gramps. we mainly went out to move his spear house. or at least get in unstuck (it was frozen down, because all the snow we just got was so heavy it pushed water up and flooded the lake (it happens everywhere, every year, but it was very bad this year)

i started by drilling roughly a dozen holes so they were ready. (i give each hole 10 minutes to produce a fish, sunny or crappie, or keeper perch, or i move on to the next. if it does produce a fish, i give it another 10 minutes, if another fish comes in, i stay another 10 minutes, and so on)

started off slow, i was playing around with small perch (yanking the bait away from them right when they were about to take it)

when a 3lb bass comes flying in and inhales my jig and euro larvea, i set the hook, but i was to late. it had already started to spit it out. i kept the jig down, hoping it would return. something came in, but it wasnt the bass. it was a crappie! it inhales the jig, i set the hook. first keeper of the day.

dropped it back down, but nothing.

i moved to the next hole, and roughly 5 minutes later, a big walleye (5+lbs) slides into the hole, and starts eyeing down my jig and euro larvea. but wouldn't commit. just seeing a walleye like that was completely unheard of! (keep in mind i am fishing in about 4 FOW)

the sun was now high in the sky, and the bite had slowed down. and no keepers were caught.

i decided to drill a few more holes. one right next to a bend of the reed line, another 10 feet out from there, another 10 feet out from that one.

little did i know that those first 2 holes i drilled, would be the site of some of the most exciting sight fishing (through the ice,) i had ever witnessed.

i kicked some slush into the holes to block the sunlight. and left them alone (to allow any spooked fish to calm down) and went back to my original holes.

kept on hopping from hole to hole, with nothing to show but small fish.

but at 3, it was as if a switch was flicked, and i had another 3lb bass fly in, and take the jig. i set the hook. but the hook pulled when the bass was right below the hole. i dropped it back down, the bass returned about a minute later, and took it AGAIN! and again, the hook pulled when it was under the hole. so i bent the hook out a bit, and dropped it back down. but the bass never returned.

as the sun dipped further down, i returned to the holes i drilled 2 hours prior. and almost instantly, i was seeing fish. right as i dropped my bait down, 3 SLAB crappies flew in, and sat around the jig, they would nip at it. but miss. then a huge 10" sunfish came sliding in to show the crappies how to catch a jig.... stupid idea... into the bucket he went. and on the wall he will go

but the crappies had spooked but i kept jigging, eventually one came flying back. he was HOT for the maggot. and nearly ripped the rod out of my hand. never had a crappie do that before. within a few seconds, a 12" crappie was in the bucket. i dropped the jig back down, and a 8+" sunfish came and grabbed it. i set the hook. and right as it started to fight. a big pike flies in and grabs it. instantly breaking the 2lb line! nearly crapped my pants!

the pike must have stuck around the area, because no fish came into any of the 3 holes until the sun started to set. as it touched the top of the trees. it seemed another switch was flicked. and i was pulling up sunfish after sunfish in the hole closest to the reeds.

and as the sun sunk below the trees. i pulled up 2 more keeper crappies. kept them both, but only one will be eaten. this picture explains why. this big fish, though beaten up. is absolutely beautiful, will be going on my wall

here is my creel of the day

grandpa is bringing me back out tomorrow and get him some more!

but until then.... good night my fishy friends.... see you tomorrow!

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!
    • leech~~
      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
