It's been pretty quiet on here lately. So, who's going to be on Cass or Kitchi for the opener? It should be a completely different ballgame this year compared to the last two years for finding fish. I'm guessing the fish will be out of the river by opener and the panfish should be in to the shallows by opener weekend. My guess is that it's going to be an excellent weekend if the weather cooperates.

I will be fishing Cass with a group of 12-14 guys. Staying at Break On The Lake. hoping with the water temps the fish will be moving out to the main lake.

Can't wait!

There will be a group of 9 of us at Anderson's resort on the river between Kitchi and Cass. With the conditions like they have been, years past I have chased the big gills and crappies more than walleye. It's a fun time of year.

RIP Floyd "Andy" Anderson, we're going to miss you this year.

+1 on the RIP for Andy.

He was a great guy. We have launched from there for many, many years.

I can tell you that I would be pulling Shad or X-Raps out in Kitchi for the 'eyes.

We'll be up the following weekend on Kitchi. Looking forward to some fresh reports.

Anybody got a guess on how many boats will be stacked up on Andrusia where it goes into Cass??? I always get a chuckle on how many boats are stacked in there.

Posted

I'll be out on the Chain this weekend as well. Looking forward to it!

Posted

Ill be on Kitchi as well on opener and as always staying at camp pennington cant wait!

Anyone know what the water levels are currently or what the water temp is?

Posted

Main lake water temp is roughly 54 degrees as of yesterday. I would expect the usual crowds at the mouth of Andrusia opening morning, which i see thinning out by mid-morning. We had a good, early spawn and there will be active post-spawn fish all over the shorelines of Cass and Kitchi. Water levels are very low, the worst being on Pike Bay. Heard the south state-owned access on Pike Bay is out of commission due to ice damage and heaved concrete. Low water will make travel via channel quite interesting, if not impossible. I'll be on Cass, good luck to all.

My brother and I are going to try and get up there by 10:00 or so Friday morning and go out and see if the panfish are biting on Kitchi. Has there been any reports in the area of a panfish bite?

I was out on Cass for the opener. I had some boat rigging issues and did not get out on the water until noon. I put in at Knutsen Dam. And fished in front of McDonald Lake. Wasn't super good. I picked up 6  and a few nice perch plus a handful of 10 inch throwback cigars. Had my best luck in about 8 feet and dragging a gold jig and minnow combo. A group of friends and co workers fished Pike Bay and they reported that the bite was much better along with a better quality size than I had. They accessed through the channel from Cass Lake.

Fished Saturday and Sunday, our boat of 4 guys caught a total of 39 walleyes. Saturday  evening was the best and Sunday slowed down with the weather coming in. picked up fish from 5' - 14'. Sunday my coworker caught a 42" musky on a jig and shiner. he was screaming like a little girl..

I didn't make it to Cass this weekend.  But rumor has it that plenty of guys were catching walleyes with great numbers of crappie mixed in.  Anybody else have any luck on the crappies?

Didn't have the chance to try for crappies. I am spending the week of memorial up there and plan on giving it a day or two. Hopefully they will still be biting good.

Snuck over a couple times last week in the evening before opener.  Yes - the crappies are on fire! ;)

Any of you gentlemen ever fish Big Wolf? A buddy just bought a place by the outlet and I'm wondering how fishing is in general on it.

Posted

Wolf is always a sure bet in the spring when the walleyes move up the river to spawn.  It does have a decent population of walleyes that stay there.  The crappie fishing is good in the winter and you can always get to Andrusia or Cass through the river channel.

Thanks Chris.  Figured it must have some decent potential being part of the chain. Since our friends are gutting the old house, I was told to pack my tool belt along with my fishing gear. I guess that's the price I gotta pay for dock space.

Well, another year has gone by and we are getting close to the 2016 fishing opener.  I'm just itching to head back up to Kitchi and Cass to try my luck again this year.  I'm hoping with the warmer spring things will be hopping on the walleye and panfish catch.  Who else is going to be up to Cass or Kitchi for opener this year?

Can't wait! 2 buddies and i are staying on kitchi. Hope weather is good for us all to be able to get out and get on some pannies an walleyes. Good luck to all and put the hurt on fish!!!

Staying at Break On The Lake Saturday - Tuesday with a group of 12 guys. Can't wait!

Maybe see some of you at the Pike Hole for a cold one.  Staying at Anderson's Resort.  Word has it the panfish had moved in this past weekend.  Hopefully they will still be holding close with the rain and cold front we are having this week.  Will be up Friday thru Wednesday.

So how was it?  Heading up to Kitchi in a few days.  Looking for some current info to get started.  Hope the bite was good despite the miserable conditions.

Tough fishing on Kitchi, did well on Cass on the humps Monday night. Some sort of fly hatch, housefly size, all over on Cass on Tuesday.  Think this might slow the bite down a bit.  Panfish bite may pick up by this coming weekend.  The cold weather over the weekend shut things down pretty tight.

We did well on Kitchi on walleyes.  Targeting cabbage during the day and shallow flats at night.  Panfish are starting to go pretty good.  Water temps in mid 60s.  Popped a 40+ inch musky right away Friday.  Was fishing by myself then so a cruddy picture.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters still in full swing offering both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite in February has been excellent, with lots of fish being caught and plenty of opportunities for fresh fish fries. Some ice roads are now extending over 20 miles out, keeping anglers on productive schools of walleyes and saugers. Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best late-season ice years in recent memory. If you’re fishing on your own, bring an auger extension, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure. As always, expect to sort through some smaller fish, but that’s a good sign of a healthy fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of time to plan your trip. Pike fishing never closes, and with the thick ice conditions, this year is shaping up to be fantastic for targeting trophy pike. March: The Go-To Month for Trophy Pike March is prime time for big northern pike, as these aggressive predators begin staging for the upcoming spawn. Lake of the Woods is loaded with pike over 40 inches, and tip-up fishing can be lights out this time of year. Anglers targeting pike should set baits under tip-ups in shallow water (6-15 feet) near pre-spawn areas, weedy areas, river mouths, or back bays. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even some crappies are in the mix. Suspended walleyes are showing up—watch electronics closely. Plenty of limits are being caught, with many anglers taking home bonus perch this season. Best Techniques: Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head continue to be the top producer. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well for aggressive fish. Lures with built-in lights have been very effective in the stained water (Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure, not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, continues to catch neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best; other days, the afternoon bite turns on. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and watching electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the best times for targeting walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head remains the go-to presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some giants being iced (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release). Safety Note: Ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, but they can change rapidly due to current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent throughout the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts are moving fish houses regularly, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies continue to be caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed overnight through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Pike season never closes—March is prime time for trophies!  Perch and crappie seasons open year-round Whether you’re looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, or comfortable lodging at a resort with or without a meal plan, there’s still time to plan your late-season ice fishing adventure.

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.

Thanks Kettle! I'll bring mine with but won't be until  mid march
