I was out yesterday and it was slow. I had my head on a swivel watching the open water that wasn't there on Friday.

Oh, and I didn't make the news. Weird.

Andy sent us this one last week when fishing off 21st Ave. E.. It was his biggest so far and it is in a Fox 21 video.

I got a 33" eelpout couple days ago on a white tube jig. I haven't caught a laker through the ice before. I hope I get the chance!

Nice pout! I wonder if you tried fishing pout at night on this side (MN) if you could get into any numbers of them? Everybody is probably to laker crazy to try.

How about 21st? The wind must be wreaking havoc. On satellite imagery almost everything is open except the small area closest to the harbor. Nobody out there fishing I assume?

21st ice is still there and there were like 8-10 portables out there...

An angler at the French earlier this afternoon phoned saying the flat ice was gone but some pack ice remains attached to the shore.

Ross. Do you know if long rod opportunity at the French exists.

Thanks.

From the call I got, it sounded possible in spots. We may have scum ice in the morning if it gets calm enough tonite, however. It changes by the minute on the shore.

I worked up in Two Harbors this morning ,,,took the scenic road back and there is open water south to McQuade safe harbor ,,,,skim ice from there to Brighton beach ,,,About 30 ice shelters out from the Lester some out close to 3/4 of a mile and about 20 off of 21st

Did see a guy unloading a side by side with tracks by the Lester ,,,I didnt see him out on the ice on my way back so maybe he got enlightened and took it back home

Afternoon all,

This past Friday night, 2/20, I was fishing off 21st E and some of my gear was taken, either on purpose or by someone with the intention to return it. Inside my black Cabela's rod case I had two HT tip-ups, a blue HT heavy-weight rod set up to fish Lakers with a grey rippin rap bait attached, an HT ultralight rod and a black medium-action ugly stick rod for pan fishing. I was one of the last people off the lake and walked up to my truck in front of a group of four gentlemen behind me. There were no other people left on the ice. My case slid off the top of my sled and it was picked up and taken by the time I turned around and swung back to get it from London Rd. If anyone knows who may have found the gear, or may have an idea of where it is, please let me know. I can be reached any time of the day at 616-566-7717 or [email protected].

Hoping whoever has it will be kind enough to return it as the first thing all outdoorsman learn is to always have good morals.

Thanks,

Conner

TS1, welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear of your lost equipment, but rest assured you picked a great place to post on. In my haste last fall I had my climber stand slip out of the bed of my truck at a busy intersection in town and freaked when I found it missing after work. I got home and came on FM and a couple other places on the web and wouldn't ya know it, someone found it and posted it here. I got my stand back and was so happy to find out there are still morally upright people out there. Good luck. I hope you get your stuff back and will keep an eye out for you. BC

So forgive a couple questions from a newbie to lakers on Superior... is there good ice to walk on? I am reading the above reports and the other threads and it is kinda hard to tell? I am seeing Marine General is a good source for info, just wondering if I drove up early sat would it be worth it to get out on the ice for the afternoon

The ice off Brighton Beach was a foot thick this morning but there were small cracks with open water not too far out that were getting stepped over to reach the deeper water. Cohos and herring were getting caught around the 40-50 depths. Predicting the future ice conditions is a tough call.

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Think the Free crawlers in the back yard are going to take a hit this summer! 🤭

Correction, rainbow minnows are at least 75 cents each, and leeches are $60 per pound. lol

Their coming! Was poking around southern center mn last Friday and found about 20 on a hill side, all to small to pick yet.  Spots on the GPS! 🤗

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow
