If I bring up my own salted minnows do they have to be shiners? Could I start salting some bigger fat heads or suckers or are only shiners allowed on Winnepeg?

Thanks

bring what you want. as long as they are dead, your fine. shiners are the main baitfish in lake Winnipeg, but you never know... a different flavour may change things up for you!

Thanks

I found a bait shop that will have frozen shiners so I will just get those and stick with the natural lake forage.

no live bait.. you can buy live minnows in winnipeg.

You can't bring live minnows into Canada from the US.

You can salt your shiners or whatever minnow you choose with regular canning salt or other salts. The salt helps to preserve them but more importantly the salt keeps it from becoming a frozen unusable block of minnows on the lake.

Other option is to freeze minnows in coke - I tried it last year after I read about it here - worked pretty good for fatheads I didn't want to bother with salting. The minnows break apart pretty easy and still work just fine.

If you plan on buying live minnows in Canada - be ready to pay. They sell them by the dozen..... meaning that there is 12 minnows in a bag. They aren't cheap either.
