Not sure if a guy who runs a REMOTE operation really wants a posting on this forum, but a guy's gotta talk about a fishing trip of a lifetime to somebody...my relatives are already tired of hearing about the trip...so here it goes!

After hitting Waskish, we followed the snowshoe hare trail to Johnny's new REMOTE location. It was an adventure. I thought we were going to run into some strange stranger-hating dudes playing banjos. I truly felt like we were watching a GO-Pro camera stuck to the back of some uber-rabbit being chased by hunting dogs! Anyways, we hit the last curve and were welcomed by the bearded wonder on a modified Suburban Track Machine! It was the same old Johnny P...14th year in a row.

We headed out to the SPOT, caught up on old times, and watched the GPS map as Johnny explained that we were actually on STRUCTURE (yes, on RED LAKE). New houses were awesome, clean, warm, and made a shrinking Dad feel tall again! Tall men, beware! Seven Foot Ceilings boost the ego and make the aging feel young AGAIN! grin

There were four of us. Four scoops of minnows. And a million walleyes beneath us! Between the 30th , 31st, and morning of the 1st, we managed a total of 200 walleyes. I know some of you are already doing the math, thinking that if a guy claims to have slept with three nurses, the truth is actually closer to one and a half, but 200 is our low-ball estimate. We were keeping great track of every fish until we hit 90 about 15 hours into the trip. We literally had FOUR MINNOWS left at the end of the trip!

(I KNOW THIS IS GETTING LONG). So, here's what you really want to know:

GLOW BLUE was by far the best color, followed by GLOW WHITE demon-like jigs with a contrasting stripe or dot. Night/Day bite were very similar. We jigged flyers, macho minnows, doodlebugs, perch talkers, lindy darters, etc. Jigging was okay, but the bobbers and deadsticks were far more effective. Weird but true, a small jigged GENZ WORM often caught the biggest fish.

The weather was COLD and the wind was HOWLING at 30-40 MPH, but the house was WARM and the bite was HOT. Biggest WALLEYE was a hair under 27" (still swimming!!), and we had three or four at 25". The vast majority (65% ) were PERFECT EATERS at 15.5 to 16.5".

We did have two NORTHERNERS come in to stir up the pot. I managed to lose one at the hole (about 10-12#s) and broke the other off. Full serving of Humble Pie provided! cry

JOHNNY P's service was impeccable. I know he's practically booked solid for the year, but if you get a chance, look him up! FANTASTIC TRIP! grin

Steeplechaser, good report. I would expect nothing less from Jonny. I would love to do this trip with him, unfortunately at my age loading, unloading, loading is just a little more than I can handle. We used to do it all the time on LOW, but I was a little younger. I noted on his site that he is almost totally booked, good for him. Great job Jonny

I can picture the road leading into his new found paradise as if it were almost a month ago.............Oh wait, it was!

Wow... I was in one of the houses on the 31st-1st, too. 3 of the 4 checking in already.. that's impressive.

We didn't catch 100, but we did catch 40 or so and probably lost another 20. Basically all of them were 15 - 19 inches.

I was very impressed with the houses, the service and the fishing. Wish i could have stayed for a week instead of just a day.

Big thank you to Johnny for an awesome end to 2014!

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?

but if he really wants I can change the date..

As soon as I started reading mind went to needles and seats.  You might want to try just replacing those first?  I’ve only done that once before in my life but it made the difference.  A carb refresh in 8,000 miles seems reasonable.

Good luck smurfy!  On getting drawn, I mean!   If it comes down to it, I know a guy that might be interested in a nice hide.
