I recently made a floor for my portable and with New Years mid week I also have Friday (tomorrow) off I wanted to get up to LOW. However with the forecast I think it'd be ballsy for me to still make that drive and Red isn't looking any better for being able to get that done. I'm looking for suggestions on where to go. I want to be able to drive my SUV and I want to focus on eyes and perch. Not sure about Mille Lacs but am if it's the last resort. Anybody have any ideas?

Thank you

Have you spent a real cold and windy night on the ice before in your portable?

I do it all the time, I'd go to LOTW or red. Leech has been good too.

Winter camping has a learning curve. If you haven't done it much I'd stick to a smaller lake.

If you don't already have one, get a co detector too.

Co bout got me once. Dead calm night, no wind to help exchange air.

I usually run a fan now if tthere is no wind.

The fishing on Mille Lacs has been quite good this year....I'm not sure why more people aren't talking about it, to be honest. People are actually catching a few keepers, too.

I did it for the first time last night on Mille Lacs. It was a lot of fun. It was extremely windy, had to stake down one side of the house. Fishing was good, steady bites until I left this morning.

Yeah BloodRiver I'm a seasoned guy, never slept in the portable before though. Already got the co detector, don't want the "Here Lies A Fisherman" tombstone just yet. Venturing to Cass tomorrow, early morning come back Saturday just after dark. Figure with that cold front moving in the one night should do. I just carpeted some 3/4" plywood and picked up some thick rubber flooring mats. That should do just fine.

I think you'll find the floor to be a waste of time and effort not to mention making you less mobile... But more and more overnights you do you'll figure out your own comforts.

Now that the year is over I will go through my log book and count my overnights, but without a doubt it's over 20.

I just set up a cot and sleep in my ice suit, boots and all.

Have fun, stay safe.

Separation from the ice is key.. need good insulation underneath you or something like an air mattress (or cot, as was just suggested) to keep the ice from sucking all the heat out of you.

If your portable is not thermal or otherwise insulated, you may want to consider rain gear. Every time I've done it, once the sun goes down, the condensation is bad.

Fan.

Makes a huge impact.

Also getting your heater off the ice helps too.

Plenty of heat and constant air flow in/out of the house also helps a ton.

When I first started over nights in my QF3 hub without a fan, airflow, adequate heating, heater on the ice, etc... Yeah bring a rain coat!! I now have a Bigfoot xl4000T so i can actually lay down on a cot (I'm real tall). After many many overnights and lots of learning experiences; I'm now generally as comfy as most in a perm.

That's what I wear when in resort perms too. When sleeping on boat... Etc. It's like a sleeping bag, except when the rattle reels go off, I don't have to unzip the sleeping bag.

Comfort, means a lot of different things to a lot of different folks. I'm young. Give me a floor and after a few drinks that floor is an adequate bed my friend.

I don't need to be in jeans and a T-shirt to be as comfy as you are.

Don't even own a sleeping bag.

FBRM, I'll be thinking of you tomorrow morning as I catch fish... with forced air heat..... a bloody mary in my hand....... a pot of coffee brewing...... bacon sizzling on the stove....watching a blue ray on one tv......and an underwater camera on another...... all while in my underwear gringrin

J/K

Just giving ya a hard time wink I've spent more nights in a portable than I care to admit..... but haven't done it since I got a wheelhouse........ can't say I miss it much either LOL

Lol.

Don't think about me too long while in your undies.

Portable ice camping is the poor man's wheelhouse smile

I gotta have my pot of coffee in the morning, so the perk is always along. Usually don't pack food that requires a pan. But I've certainly made bacon to steaks to fried parsnips or fresh broccoli, eggs, you name it. Honestly, I just pack super light most the time now.

I'll be giving the daughter her last saucer ride for the winter in the morning. Flies back to Seattle in the afternoon full-48193-52108-camerazoom_201501021420

Please, no disrespect meant for your choice of sleeping bag. I just thought the comparison was a little funny.

Went well minus the lack of fish. I did not get the condensation, sure there was frost but it never rained down on me. It was -10 out and 20mph winds and I was just fine. The floor was a huge help to keep it warm inside, very happy with that. Now I got my poor mans sleeper. Here's a few pictures.
