Any words on the Crappie and sun fish bite on Big Marine?

Posted

I was out there today. Fishing was terrible. Wind was terrible. Cold was terrible (forgot propane bottle). The cold front probably had something to do with my luck today.

BM is not kind during a cold front.

Was out there three times last week and it was really slow too. Heard the crappie window is very tight out there but when it's on, it's on.

Was out yesterday from 1pm to 5pm. 12 ft depth. 11" and 12" crappie immediately back to back then nothing. marked fish from time to time rest of day but no interest. I didn't move around much cause it was kind of chilly out there. 13" of ice where I was (NW end of lake). I saw a few full size trucks out there.

I had a permanent shack off the south access the last few years mostly pike fishing and staying away from other anglers, im going to try some different areas this year looking for crappies any tips would be appreciated.

I was out on Big Marine on February 5 and 6. Measured 17 inches of solid ice. Caught quite a few northern. Most were snakes though I did catch a couple decent ones.

Fishing for panfish, I've stumbled into quite a few small bass the couple times I have been out there this spring. Biggest were around 14 inches. They've been fun on light tackle. Handful of very small northerns as well. Only one crappie, but have found a few sunnies.

Went out to Big Marine this morning looking for some 12-14" crappie a friend living on lake clued me in on that he connected with this past Sunday midday. They were not active so we switched focus to Blue Gills. Did quite well but had to work a bit to get them. Some nice 7 to 8 inchers and a fewBig_Mar_9.5_gill.thumb.jpg.62d781f8ee821 at 9 and 9 1/2. Had bright sun, pressure at 30+ light wind. Got a few smaller catch & release bass 10-12" range. Water is remarkably clear visible down about 10 ft. Surprised at the number of boats on the lake for a Thursday. North access only had a couple of spots open.

Here's a bass I caught this weekend.  Biggest I've gotten yet out of the lake.

Buddy and I back out to Big Marine yesterday, late start due to FL Trans. start up meeting. First thing noticed is water still very clear. Started on east bay target Crappies in 14 fow weeds up to 7 Ft. using good variety of jigs, tried with minnow head, piece of leach, and some plastics. Not a single strike. Wind and foot waves made boat control difficult. Buddy dragging a lindy with a red/white float, single red hook and minnow down 7 ft. just above the weeds got two medium Bluegills, and a small bass. Moved to west shore got out of the wind a bit. Balance of afternoon produced zero. Marked very few fish, no bait balls. Stopped and talked to 3 other boaters having same result. just one of those days. Doing State fair this weekend.
