Boats still launching out there?

The lake has been too rough for boating lately.

going to mcquade and up north to the two harbors docks to check for any fishable ice tomorrow early morning. I'll check back in the afternoon and let ya know how it went!

Be safe Nate. That ice can be sketchy and Superior gets real mean. Let us know what you find. Good luck grin BC

sounds good. be careful and thanks for any reports. i will be up soon doing some shore fishing when the weather get a little nicer.

So we went up to two harbors early and no ice whatsoever. Mcquade had about five inches of ice in the safe harbor, but only 1/3 of it was completely frozen. Big waves rolling in through the lake entrance breaking most of it up. Didn't fish it because of the waves moving everything around, but stopped by on the way home and there was a pop up shack out on the main ice slab. Ended up going to the knife river marina for the afternoon. Looked like there was a shack out earlier in the day and we fished about three hundred yards down the channel. Was almost completely frozen to the lake with open water on both sides. Solid six inches of ice but our trip was cut short by the wind moving the ice out towards the big water. Had to get our gear and get out before we took a ride on the iceberg! Caught just over a half dozen loopers, all extremely small. Eight to twelve inches. Gonna wait for the weather to allow me to hit it again soon!

Are you sure they weren't little brook trout? That's usually what guys catch in the knife river marina...

Posted

Yes I'm positive they weren't brookies haha. Wish I would've taken a picture of one little guy to put up here

Posted

The brookies in there will take on a very silvery color, not your typical looking stream brook trout.

Posted

Were they clipped then? If they were loopers they would have had clipped fins.

Are you drilling holes right along docks? I've seen them do that on shows where they are fishing harbors on lake michigan. I never considered knife river harbor area before. Could be interesting.

With the Kamloops production shift that began in 2010, 73% of the annual Kamloops stocking quota is now planted at an average size of only 7+ inches. In the past, most were planted at 9+ inches and grew into the teens by fall when most people started to fish for the adults. Catching recent plants didn't occur frequently then nor does it happen frequently now. But, it does happen. I caught a few eight inchers myself last winter through the ice at the McQuade and the Lester. Kamloops now are getting adipose and pelvic fin clips which makes them easy to differentiate from other juvenile fish that might be caught. Last summer's plants had adipose and the left pelvic fin clipped. Left is for odd year classes and right is for even year classes. They aren't legal to keep until they are a minimum of 16 inches long. Little Steelhead are sometimes caught through the ice as well. They have a "very sivery color" and of course are not legal at any size.

Last summer we were still catching adult loopers when they stocked the little ones. They were annoying for about a week till they dispersed.

Yeah all the fish we caught were clipped. I know how to tell my fish apart believe me. And we drilled our holes right in the middle of the channel that goes out to the lake. You can't drill holes by any of the docks because they keep pumps running throughout the winter so they won't freeze up. Bad idea to go anywhere near the docks

Was fishing this spring when the French dumped "thousands" of the 8-12" loopers/fish. They were everywhere. It's not surprising some are showing up near Mcquade.

Going further north this weekend, will be hitting the shore and Mcquades later next month. Keep the reports of ice/freezing posted.

That's a wrap on my ice season, have to head back to the cities for a while. Fished the last 3 nights and we managed to get a handful of crappies every night. Here's some pictures over the last 3 outings. Cool fog over the lake tonight. Kept a few for a meal.

I started going to Haydays when I moved to Blaine in the mid-80's.  Waldoch was very convenient from Blaine.  I quit going for several years when they moved it to North Branch.  I've gone there the last 3 years and like the new layout better.  Parking and admission has gotten very pricey but the event offers a lot to do and see.  Now that I moved up north, Princeton would probably be further for me than North Branch, but maybe I will give it a try.

I to started out at the haydays back when it was at Waldoch.  I went to the Haydays last fall for the first time in about 6 years, only because my grandsons wanted to see the "C-Boys" some U-tub clowns that trash stuff on U-tube.  Two hours in line to see these clowns!  Not me I sat in a UTV for sale at a stand as they were in line! 馃槅  I use go every fall to Princeton-Outlaws, Anoka-Rum river runners at the Anoka fairgrounds and once in a while the very small swap at the Brainard fair grounds.  I can't even remember all the stuff I bought over the years for snowmobile, 4 wheelers, and dirtbikes.  馃お

haydays has become to commercialized now. We started going in the early 90's. Now there is way too may people. I'm there for the swap. I don't have snowmobiles anymore but when the kids were young we had 5 cats from the 90's. We bought a lot helmets, suits and parts there. Now the boys can buy and fix there own sleds. Maybe this year we will check out the outlaw drag this year.

Haydays can be fun but some times a picker nightmare to get in and out of.  I like the Outlaw grass drag and swap meet in Princeton,  MN a few weeks before Haydays.  If you don't find it there you can always then check Haydays.  I've found must everything I ever needed at the Outlaws swap!

Make sure the unit is firmly in the cradle. Sometimes it seems in place and a loose connection will occur with sporadic power. The other thing is, if he has a micro USB map chip in, remove it. If it's corroded Sometimes these units will shut off in attempt to not cause electrical harm
