You will never go back to a flasher! I took my Humminbird 788 off my boat and used it all last winter. My unit is led, so the battery life is long. This style of sonar displays history, you will know if a fish came into the zone if you looked away for a moment. It is a lot easier to tell the mood of a fish and what they do and don't like for action. In time, you can make educated guesses on species and size. The biggest plus is you will have sonar and gps in one unit. My trusty old FL-18 is collecting dust now!
