My son and I are getting ready for our second trip to red. We went up last year and didn't do so well so want to make sure we are extra prepared this year. I have read that for jigging, spoons seem to be the ticket (rattlers flyers macho minnows) and such. When using these types should I just be using the head of the minnow instead of a whole minnow? Next when using a dead stick is it best to just use a plain hook or can I use a small jig like a glow or something? What do you guys do after you have caught a few and know that you will be releasing the rest? Do you switch to using just a single hook? Seems to me that a treble hook is going to tear the fishes mouth apart if they are hitting hard. We are going with bear paw this year and from what I read they will have plenty of advice for us. I just want to make sure I arrive with everything I will need.

Thanks in advance for sharing.

Like you said, have a variety of jigging spoons, jigging/rippin raps and other lures to draw them. Try a variety of colors with and without a minnow head to see what they want. On your dead stick you can use a hook/split shot under a bobber. Try plain, red, glow, etc. hooks with rainbows or fatheads. You and your son can set up with different combinations of jigging and dead sticks to see what they prefer. Then switch your other setups to match.

Good luck!

Plain red hook with a split shot and a fathead a foot off the bottom and at least 100 ft away from any other holes/traffic and I will bet you A LOT that set up catches more than anything else.

Thanks guys. My son reads some of these reports and is super excited as am I. If we can even catch 20 fish a day we both will be thrilled. I believe bear paw goes out of westwinds. Do you know if they will cook up a meal for us if we happen to catch a few? If so can I clean them at their resort or do I have to do that in my truck?

They will cook up 2 fillets per person plus give you a few sides for around $8... and if you want will cook up a few extra fish for a couple bucks. They have a nice cleaning house but not sure about using it if you don't pay the road fee. Good luck and have a blast.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
