Bait shops in Metro

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone,

Just wanted to know if people could share bait shops close that they know and where abouts of it, I believe it will be really helpful to eachother. Especially when you want to fish new waters the best place to get advice is a bait shop close to it.

Thanks in advance!

Shakopee Bait and Tackle. Very happy to see a bait shop open up right in my neighborhood in Shakopee. So far the bait has been lively, the service good and very friendly. Give them a shot...I love a good family owned bait shop!

Wanted to throw another shout out to Shakopee Bait. I live near there and have been there the past couple weeks and couldn't be happier with the bait and more importantly the guy running it. Very friendly and happy to chat.

SHAKOPEE BAIT right off on the west side of Marschall Road just south of the video store & pizza place in Shakopee.

Support that business! Beautiful new shop, great people!

What a nice addition to the south metro.

In St. Paul I use Kathy's Bait on Rice Street about a block north of Maryland. Always been happy with their prices and size of scoop. Not the most chatty shop around though.

The other place I go is Joes Sporting Goods on Rice and 36. Their prices are higher but they have longer hours and they guys working there usually have more information to share. Customer service in the fishing department at Joe's is always very good.

I'm lucky that I live within 2 miles of 2 good places to buy bait. I like to support both places as much as possible. I buy most of my bait from Kathy's but I try to buy a lot of my gear from Joes.

Bald Eagle Bait, the white gas station, just north of Bald Eagle public access on 61. Good place, as is Blue Ribbon new store on 61 and 96 right by WBL.

edit - oh yeah, the Clark station on east side of 61 just north of where 96 comes in from 35E, has bait too. They also have good propane exchange price, but they don't fill there. I think Blue Ribbon fills and Bald Eagle Bait fills as well.

Give some thought to buying gear from the small shops. They can't make it on bait alone. You may pay a few bucks more but keeping those places going makes a lot of things easier.

I do buy a few things at Kathy's but they don't have a big selection of tackle so its more one off items I'll pick up there. I do usually pick up soda and a candy bar with the bait though.

I buy a lot of my stuff at Joe's because its also a local family run shop, just a bigger one thats been around forever. They might have slightly higher prices but they do a great job hiring knowledgeable staff.

I just discovered the Amstar at 169 and Medicine lake Road has a very small selection of wax worms and crappie minnows.

Big B's opened a while back on Bass Lake Road in Maple Grove/Plymouth. Used to be Johnson's bait. New owner is friendly and I like there's still a bait shop in that area. I also buy from Harty's if I'm fishing Medicine. Drop Joe a donation for the road he plows out there. Small price for the service and report on ice conditions and fishing.

Had 30 feet of ice out from my Stuntz Bay boathouse on Tuesday afternoon.  None inside the boathouse so I was easily able to remove my boat from the lake (just pushed the ice away in reverse and drove forward through it with my 16 foot aluminum boat).  Didn't hook up my battery so I didn't get the lake temp.  Were lots of boat trailers parked at the landing.  Hope they get off the lake easily.  Will be ice fishing in 4 weeks.

On the South Shore...  It's deer hunting season in MN and not many are out fishing.  Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.   The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     No surprise, vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is the program for most anglers.  Anglers are going through a lot of frozen emerald shiners as the walleyes and saugers are all mixed sizes.  You will catch small ones and your eaters.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well.    Anglers are also reporting very good numbers of jumbo perch this fall.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      Good numbers of fish are staged in great spots for the upcoming ice fishing season. On the Rainy River...  Good numbers of shiners again in the river this past week. Typically, if there are shiners, there will be walleyes, and there definitely are.     Walleyes are coming from various spots from Four Mile Bay to Wheeler's Point, to Baudette all the way to Birchdale.  With so many anglers taking advantage of the deer hunting season, there are not a lot of boats on the river.      Walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.  The bait and consequently, walleyes, are moving around.  Once you find some fish, you will be rewarded. Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the way to go. Some anglers are also still trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  For those not in the woods hunting, fall fishing continues to be excellent.  It is areas with structure holding walleyes in this part of the lake.  Points, neck-down areas with current, shoreline breaks, and transition zones from rock to mud are all productive locations for walleye right now.     A nice mixed bag with perch, pike and crappies being caught as well. Good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

Yes.  No lightning strikes in the area on Saturday and a tree was burning.  The squirrel hunters have been a nuisance this year with more activity in our area then we have ever seen.  This was the 3rd fire in the section of woods in the past 2 weeks.  Most definitely not caused by natural events.

Stop, trying to make everybody feel bad that not in the woods!   😟  😆

Haha!  No… In other news: All the cell cams users that I talk with are seeing some daylight movement of adult bucks since yesterday.  No deer hunters want to be at work right now.

The water temps on the west end Friday were 45 in HeadOLakes and 44 in the smaller bays.

You didn't Sluice um! 😆 I was driving 94 passed Runnings in Monticello yesterday late after noon and saw a huge, thick dark brown 8 point running alone the freeway with its tongue out.  Thinking he was after a girlfriend! 😜
