so, kids with dark houses don't need a shelter license?

My boy (17) just went to buy a shelter license for his house and they wouldn't sell him one. Said he doesn't need it because he's under 18?

Do I need to buy a shelter license and put on for him or is he actually legal without one?

I think I would buy one. What would happen if you were in the house with him and you got checked????? They will ask is the house yours or his. Best bet, go buy one

I'm going to go and buy one, I was thinking the very same. I plan on sitting with him this weekend out on bostic bay on LOTW, I just want to hang out and watch. I won't even have a spear. But if a CO check us and the 44 yr old sitting in the house points at the 17 yr old and says "its his house"..... Yeah, I think we know how that would go....

don't quote me on this but its always been my understanding the number you put on the shelter has to match the shelter license!!!!!

We built this house for him a couple years ago. The first 2 years with it he was 15 then 16 yrs old and he purchased his own shelter license both years.

Good point on the shelter license info matching the fisherman's license.

Now, super dumb question.... Does he need a spearing license or does angling cover it?

I seriously don't know, I've not speared. He showed interest a couple years ago so I helped him get into it and he loves it.

I recently tried to go online and buy my 17 year old a spearing licences. When I logged in to the system with his DNR# and DL it and put one in his check out cart and tried to buy it a message popped up saying that he did not need one because he was under 18. So I think all he needs is the fishing licence. But then again I am not a C.O.

If you are not going to leave it (shelter) out overnight there is no need for a shelter license.

Update, we tried at a different license station and they sold my kid a resident dark house shelter license no problem. So, apparently our issue was human error at a particular bait shop.

So, problem solved.
