I am heading to Kansas tomorrow morning for the rifle opener. We have access to 80 acres of property. Never been there before, never got to scout. It will be a learning experience from A to Z. After hunting in MN and seeing squat, I just hope we see deer.

Any last minute tips for a newbie to Kansas?

Thanks!

How did this trip ever turn out?

We got down there on opening day. The property had a big section of woods to the South with feeders on it. The land total had about 35 acres of woods, with pasture and one field, all just overgrown grass. To the North it was just farms with cows and pasture land. We saw 4 deer going in to the spot so we were optimistic. Once hunting on Thursday I got a doe and small buck at 11 am. I had turkeys come by at about 80 yards, and then a few deer running around. I got lucky and had one stop in front at 125 yards. A couple minutes after I dropped this one I saw more movement by it. I dropped this one after I noticed an antler in my scope. It dropped and that was it. I saw one other deer later that day, but was tagged out, and waiting for my dad to shoot something. He never did see a deer.

In 10 days of hunting this year, MN and KS, he never once saw a deer in the woods. Talk about a rough year.

I walked the property on the last day and found one little ridge spot that had a rub on every tree, big rubs little rubs, all over. They were close to where we were hunting and if something would have been in there, we would have seen it, so it was all old stuff. The land itself was just not a draw at all for anything to come to. The big woods to the south and feeders hurt our game, but we still had fun. It was a beautiful spot, with a catfish pond just out the door of the tent. Chalk it up to a fun experience with great people! Just no Kansas monster to show for it, which is alright with me. I just would have liked my dad to get a look at a deer anyway.

I did find one nice dead head in the walk though, which is a great bonus.

Sounds like you stumbled on to a buck bed with all the rubs, keep an eye on that.

My 30 year-old Indy 500 (over 8,000 miles) has been having a mid-range bog for many years now.  It is worse on warm days and when the engine is warmer.  The sled runs fine up to about 1/4 throttle, then runs extremely rich up to 3/4 throttle.  The spark plugs are dark brown (better brown than down?) but not saturated.  8 years ago I moved the clips on the jet needles from the 3rd to the 2nd groove to lean the mixture and it helped for a while.   Should I move the clips to the top groove (temporary solution)? Could the jet needles, needle jets, and/or the main jets be warn and need replacement?   Don't think I will have time to tear the carbs apart this season for a rebuild so I may just band-aid the problem.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
