Went out Sat morning took a four wheeler out. From where We drilled we found 8-10 inches straight out from the public access a little past the 30 foot hole where everyone seems to camp out. Drilled 20 holes for 3 guys bounced around hole to hole finding them stacked in holes. Most fish were found in 25 FOW. I was using a red blood worm tipped with a wax worm. When I got into them I was just using the plastic didnt have time to barley close my bail before they hit let alone put a wax worm on after the catch. Caught my limit out of one hole in less than 30 mins. Could have been more selective on the fish but I was not staying long. Caught a bonus eye as well.

3 guys limit

I believe the other two that met us up there got theirs too

May have to Rush this weekend. Nice catch!

Posted

Nice catch, sounds like the ice is safe everywhere out there?

Posted

I can not say the ice is safe everywhere. I can only speak for where I was. I can say give caution around the islands.

Posted

The ice is definetly not safe everywhere. There was a large swath of open water south of Wilson Island and a crack/pressure ridge leading from the eatern shore of West Rush out to it on Friday.

Was out yesterday morning and a few individuals were driving. I thought I was going to witness my first car through the ice, but they made it out. I was by the 30' hole and there was about 8-10" of ice. There was a S10 and a few cars like a Yaris out there. Not recommending driving yet, especially a full sized truck. The fishing was good right as soon as I got there(6am) and I was done by 10.

bassmann77 I PM'd you.

I was out yesterday on west saw a small car drive out. Where we fished on west we measued 10-11 inches in a few different spots. But the ice is not that thick everywhere out there. It is still shifting quite a bit judging by the ice heave at the landing.

I highly advise against driving on West Rush any time soon.

Went out this morning after work fished from 8am to 1pm

Well passed 50-60 fish caught I would say

Had a nice dinnerfull-43444-51741-crapz.jpg

27 feet of water just drilled like a mad man and did not drop line unless they were stacked. 1/16th green glow tungsten jig head with a red blood worm plastic.

Put a green gulp power bait nibbler on and seemed to weed out the dinks for some reason.

Holes would be tons of fish for 10 mins then vanish and have to move 10 yards to the next hole to find them again.

About a dozen cars and small SUV's driving on Rush yesterday afternoon. Great day to be out but couldn't find crappies. Found one sunny, one small eye and a few decent perch. Too early for me to be driving. Most had atv's or walked.

Went out yesterday afternoon/evening with the fiance.(which i am sad to say she outfished me this time) Tried some tip-ups for northern and struck out. started fishing for crappies at sunset and did pretty well....glad to see they are starting to get a little bigger since the past few years....unless we were just getting lucky. Kept our limit, got home and forgot how long it takes to fillet 20 crappie tired

Is the ice thick enough to drive yet? Was planning on giving Rush a try this weekend. Thanks

Last I heard there was some smaller vehicle out. I can not say that I would drive out. As always check for yourself to see if you would..

Crappies can be had with a short walk though

I heard it has been a zoo out there. How is the parking situation?

I honestly am baffled how these two lakes maintain quality, let alone any, fish at all... So many people.

I agree. Was out there last Saturday, wow what a Sh!t show. Managed to bring home a meal of some nice 9 1/2 - 10 inch perch though. Can't believe people were driving. Yeah, there was 10-12 inches of ice but it can't be that consistant everywhere. Also had some jack wagon drive within 10ft of my portable.

I'm thinking about going to Rush Lake tomorrow afternoon to be with the crowd. I don't mind the crowd as long as everyone clean up after themselves and respect one another. Usually, if it is a zoo like that, tends to have trash. I hope that is not the case. Looking forward to it though. First time out this year on hard water.

I made it out Saturday afternoon and fished until 6:30 PM. Wow...it was a zoo out there. I can't believe how many people were out. The time I was there, all I hear was the sound of augers, snowmobiles, and four wheelers. It was so noisy. There was couple full size trucks that drove out. One drove right next to mine house and ice was cracking like crazy. I was sure he's going to take down people that was close by but he went passed us. There were 11" of ice and water on top. Fish action was good from 3 PM - 6:30 pm when I left. I only managed keep my limit of 10 crappies. No perch or eyes. It was worst when I got back to my truck in the parking lot. There were more people coming and the lot was full so many were parked on the lake close by shore. Crazy...this is the most people I've seen all my years of ice fishing. It is like a mini ice fishing tournament out there.

Posted

Yup!!

This is about the time when they park on the ice next to the landing like Lemmings, and the whole bunch of them end up WET.

Posted

Was out there Saturday as well. There could have been easily 200-300 people out. I was by cigar island and there were like 30+ people in that one little area. Vintage snowmobiles and augers sure added to the noise. Did well on the craps (nothing to write home about with size 9-11") 4 nice perch and a 17" eye. Not a thing before 3:30. Sure was foggy on that walk back.

Don't know about you guys but I was just waiting for one of those cars towing portables and people to tap the breaks and watch them eat bumper.

Makes you wonder what the walleyes think of it all, doesn't it?

Yikes, that's a lot of people.

How is the ice out there with this cold front? Trucks driving around yet?

Posted

I was out there on 12/31. I think the island just south of Cigar is Wilson and I fish a little north of there. I had 12-13 inches of ice. There were plenty of vehicles on the ice but the ice was very noisy when they drove by, especially the new Ford Explorer driving way too fast. I would not drive out there this weekend but next weekend should have no problem. People were parking on the ice just off the landing also. With as little snow as there is on the lake it is not that big a deal to walk out. I pulled two sleds out, one with my 7 yr old daughter, and everything was fine.

I'll be going up there this coming weekend and plan on driving my 1/2 ton out. I went up there around Christmas for my first time on rush and got away from the crowds and landed tons of nice crappies with some pearch and gills. My marcum was lit up halfway up with marks. This weekend I wanted to try for some eyes. I was reading earlier posts on different threads and sounds like 15-18ft is my best bet. Any tips or pointers would be nice. I plan on drilling all over and don't plan on setting up the shack. Pm me if you'd like. Just lookin for general info. Any helps appreciated.

Posted

I went up there and wow was it packed. It was crazy how many people were up there. I somehow managed to get away from the cities of people and got on a piece of structure all to myself and caught quiet a few walleyes and nice perch.

How much ice? I have 1ton and wheel house

Posted

I didn't measure but you'd be fine. 1 tons and wheel houses all over the lake. Some areas had 10 or more lined up five feet apart from each other. Ice is a bit noisey but that lake had the most people on it I have ever seen.

Out there on yesterday, 18" plus.

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

If you stop by Kramer lake on 38 north of Rapids someone made a chair out of a hospital commode and a lunch tray. Been there for 20 years.
