Older Otter Den opinions....

Hi,

I have a line on an older (Green) Otter Den that is for sale. I know the quality of Otter products, but have never fished out of one - have used other brands like Frabill, HT, etc.

How 'hard' does the Otter pull, compared to some other brands? I'm hoping there is minimal difference.

Any other input you have is appreciated.

Not sure compaired to other brands but id make sure it has high fax or put it on. I have a otter lodge and love it but when it get full it can be a bugger to pull in alot of snow so weight is everything.

Thats what I have and until I modified it, pulling it was fine. I too recommend putting the runners on the sled. As far as the canvas goes, I replaced it with the insulated kit from canvas kraft as my canvas had seen better days. I purchased my over 10 years ago and its still going strong.

Put downhill skis under it. I've been seeing people pulling shelters out on foot and none of them pull easy loaded down. Skis will cut the drag down by 50% Hyfax runners won't do that. I think the runners must just help the tracking when being towed by a wheeler. With skis I can pull out without sweating, unless like last year when there was a foot of snow, then I'd a been sweating just walking in it.

I wouldnt buy a old green skinned Otter unless it was DIRT cheap. Not with thermal topped and full thermals out now. Check the for sale forum here and I have 2 very nice newer Otters for sale.
