Any reports on ice thickness on Shamineau, Alexander, Fish Trap

Posted

Walked out on fishtrap this afternoon. Had about 10 inches in the bay off the public acsess, out where the lake opens up only had about 6 inches, decided not to take the atv out.

Fished around the island on Friday and Saturday. Measured 9 inches of ice. slow fishing. 1 14 inch walleye and a small northern. Anyone else been catching any?

Any new reports on the ice thickness? Saw a few houses on Shamineau but no cars or trucks out.

I went out last night not exactly sure how much ice but somewhere around a foot I drove my side by side out there is a big Crack that runs from augers towards the north Shore in front of the weeds I drove over it but not to sure how the whole thing is fishing was a little slow

As of this morning the latest is about 12" of ice on the west side of Shamineau. That crack running north from Augers is actively moving and open, and there is only about 6-7" near it.

I was just thinking about going out to give it a try. Ripper do you know where people are crossing it then.

Did a bunch of drilling this weekend. The west side is in good shape other than near the cracks. There is one running east/west off the west shoreline, and another running from Augers straight north. These intersect just NW of Augers. There is generally 12", and as much as 14", but near the cracks we found as little as 5", and quite a few spots with right around 8". You definitely don't want to be taking vehicles or bigger houses anywhere near the cracks without doing a bunch of checking.

Fishing was slow.

Any new ice reports for the lake as to ice thickness and vehicle traffic ?

Posted

11-14" on the west side where we drilled. I drove out, but we have a very specific route we know is safe.

As a side note, there's a number of guys driving ATV's through the the second access channel off the west side. Do what you want, but I wouldn't even walk through there if you paid me. If there's a bad spot on the lake, that's it.

What is the ice thickness on the east side around the island?

where or what is the second access channel? from the access. I have a place at Augers

and curious

Thanks for posting that Lip_Ripper Guy.

Maybe I'll see you guys up there sometime this winter!

I heard that the west access is in bad shape, cement buckled and is sticking up. Any info on this and is anyone driving trucks out yet ?

Posted

The cement is buckled but there is a path around it. Talked with the DNR last weekend and they are hopefully going to get it fixed soon. East access is better.

There was over 18" of ice everywhere we checked last weekend. Drove my half ton and 20' fish house across the whole lake, and my cousin drove his 1 ton diesel with a 20' house on the eastern half, along with a suburban and 24' house. The crack that was running from Augers to the north seemed to be healed up, but still be careful. There is another crack that runs north to south about 1/4 mile east of the Bible Camp that you'll also want to be careful about. We drove across both, but did a fair amount of checking.

Thanks Dipper, did you drive on west side or east? How hard is it to get up the hill on east side? When it warms up I want to get out with my Truck, trailer, and 4X8 perm.

I went on the lake from the west side, off on the east side. It was a bit tricky getting my house (and even just the truck) across the shoreline heave, but I was able to do it. My cousin went on from the east side, and I and will be from now on as well.

No problems getting up the hill. It is pretty much all gravel.

Those flooding problems are a sign of your needle and seat are leaking.  If the needle has a ring around the tip you can clean it if it's brass. If it has a black rubber tip then it needs to be replaced. You can clean the needle and seat with things like rubbing compound or even toothpaste I use a product called Semi chrome. It for polishing die pins. Just clean them up after polishing.

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?
