I'm going to be heading out Sunday. Hopefully around 1-9 or so. Never been on the lake but I figured I'd walk or snowmobile out to the meth hole and just set up there. All I have is crappie and walleye gear so slender spoons and buckshot and things like that. I'm just curious how you fish for cats through the ice. Any tips would be great! I'm not lookin for your secret spot or anything but anything from what jigs are best and what bait works good. Thanks!

Scroll through past posts here in the St. Cloud forum on the subject of tackle and tactics; you will be reading for hours. Crappie gear is all that's needed, along with minnow heads and/or chicken liver.

Good luck out there Sunday, let us know how things went.

Cool. I'll be looking through all the threads. Can I snowmobile from the winter access to the method hole with the current ice conditions?

'Cattin the chain' 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 threads all have a ton of stuff in them smile 2015 is getting started now.

Here's the 2015 post:

The list goes on.

Basically over the years Darren and I sort of migrated from jigging all the time to mostly using bobbers, and from daytime fishing to night fishing (obviously we get out before dark but now fish well past dark).

Check out some of Darren't videos on youtube for ice cats. They can be informative.

Only tips I have are

a) don't go to big on hook or bait -- these aren't flatheads mid-summer smile

B) jig to get them to show up, but if they're there they will likely want it sitting still before biting. obviously there are exceptions to the rule but in general they won't bite an aggressively jigged bait like a walleye might.

c) neutrally bouyant bobbers

d) they can be anywhere in the water column

e) fishing sharp breaks has been the best for us.

f) drill plenty o holes while it's light out, and try to find the schools of fish. if you aren't marking fish by the time it's dark, keep moving until you do. You should be able to find giant schools of fish and they'll stick around as long as you have a line in the water most of the time.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
