I'm going to take a quick trip to Florida in February or early March to try some in shore fishing. Not sure if that is a good time to go but it is my only choice. I am clueless when it comes to fishing down there so I intend on hiring a guide. Can anybody steer me in the right direction as far as where to go or even better yet, any guides that they can recommend? We do not have a preference on what type of fish we want to catch just looking for some good action.

First thing you gotta do is tell us WHERE in FL you are planning to visit. Makes a MAJOR difference in the species, timing, waters etc.

We are wide open. Hopefully we can find a place within a few hours drive from one the major airports. We have not purchased any plane tickets yet so we are very flexible to where we go.

A few Qs:

1) Is this a fishing specific trip, or are you going for something else and hoping to just have a day on the water?

2) Do you have any tackle you plan to bring for shore fishing?

3) How long is your stay?

4) location matters a lot. Panhandle vs further south on the gulf vs keys vs atlantic side all are quite different, are all on the table or are any off the table? Your more major airports are Tampa, Ft Meyers, Orlando, and Miami.

My only experience is with the Ft Meyers area. There can be great fishing had, but generally my experience with being out in a boat is catching a couple dozen ladyfish and 1-2lb pompano. My best catches have come drowning cut bait from the beach while taking a nap.

Bang for your buck, fishing from the beach on the gulf side with a few heavier spinning reels on long surf casting rods with bait is the way to go. Guides are expensive, and I've never had enough disposable cash to do more than one day on any single vacation. Go to a bait shop and they'll put you on fish, pretty much guaranteed unless the bite is off for everyone.

Thanks mainbutter! Here are the answers to your questions:

1.This is a fishing only trip. I am taking two clients so I want all three of us to fish together out of the guide's boat. The company I work for will be paying for the trip so as long as the guide is in the $500 to $700 per day range I should be okay.

2. We will not be bringing any tackle. We will need to hire a guide that supplies the tackle.

3. We are planning on two full days of fishing.

4. We are open to any location. Just looking to show a customer a good time. I would say numbers of fish would be more important than size.

If you have any other advice I would like to hear it. Thanks.

my idea is to fly to ft.meyers

take the key west express to key west

my dream trip. haven't talked my wife into it though

I cannot offer you any real experience tips but I have a week booked with some fishing included down in the Keys in Islamorada. They call the area the sport fishing capital of the US. You can fly into Miami and it is a short drive from there and you can book guides to take you in the backcountry for Redfish, Snook, Bonefish etc. You can also go offshore for grouper, shark, and whatever. I plan to hire a guide for one day and then rent a boat for several other days to go backcountry.

That is exactly what we are going to do fivebucks. We are going to stay at Bud N Mary's and fish the backcountry of the Everglades for two days. We are going to hire a guide for both days so we don't have to bring any equipment with. Can't wait to get down there!

Guess I might as well get in on this...

My wife and I were thinking about heading to the keys this winter, first time.

We're wide open on timing, although she kinda wants to get out of dodge in late Jan or feb. It's not really a fishing trip, but she's cool with doing some fishing as we really have no agenda, other than hopefully seeing Hemingways place in Key west.

But after doing some research, I'm kind of leaning away from the whole thing for a couple reasons. First, hotel and rental car prices I'm seeing are way high. I know it's high season, but still surprised. Plus, availability is tight, leading me to believe everything will be crowded as well. Not really our scene.

And it seems that fishing wise, a trip in April/May would be a whole lot more productive.

I've got lots of air miles so we can go pretty much anywhere, I just thought FL because I haven't been there and always wanted to see the keys.

I guess what I envision is a little cottage type place with some sand and privacy, and some snook or small tarpon to play with.

Too much to ask in Feb?

We booked a place thru VRBO and they have kayaks, snorkling gear and other things to use as well as dock space. I haven't been to the Keys for 30 years so I wanted to get back. We tried to do it last year but found out the places book pretty far in advance. Traveler, feel free to PM me and I will let you know where we are staying or wait until I get back and I will give you the low down. I think you are right Traveler that the fishing would be better a bit later but we are going mid-Feb cause that's what works. Surprising to me also is the wife just said I might have to go back to AK in the summer cause we are out of salmon laugh

You want a little cabin and some beach. You want some privacy and some fishing too. From beach or with a guide? Look at the camps along the Yucatan south of the giant tourist nightmare that has been created around Playa del Carmen and north.

Not the tiniest bit like it used to be, but a lot more space and a lot more fun than anywhere in SO Florida. You simply CAN'T have a decent tarpon trip out of Key West anymore because if you're not banging into the boat next to you the fish you just hooked leaped and landed in another guys boat!

I might exaggerate some.

But not much.

will do fivebucks. ufatz; my wife wants to see the keys once anyway, so I'm just trying to find the best situation I can...the private little cottage was a long shot:) We've been to Mexico a bunch, not this time.

I think I've found a niche that interests me...sounds like there are cobia in the keys in feb and I've always wanted to try for those, so now I'm looking for some more info on them.

Some ideas to throw your way:

I assume that most on the trip rarely if ever have a chance to fish for stuff in the salt water. This is probably not a group that regularly seeks a trophy tarpon on a fly rod, nor a group that wants to troll all day for a low chance at catching a billfish.

Pick a potential destination. Google some guides and ask questions of the guys who take out clients about what is available in the time period you plan on being there.

If it were me taking midwest guys out, I'd try to find a guide who could wear everyone out catching sharks. The fun you have tangling with a bigger fish just can't be beat, and sharks are usually a good bet for both reliability, numbers, and size. You also usually don't have to travel too far. A morning of catching bait on lighter tackle, putting out some chum and fillets in the tide/current, and waiting for some toothy grey finned fish to show up is pretty routine.

Basschaser, I can recommend a charter service based out of Marathon, FL which is the middle key of the Florida Keys. We have fished with Seasquared Charters and Capt Chris Johnson since 2007 and he does a great job. His mate Jason rounds out the stellar team. Christy is also top notch and is Chris' wife handling reservation and all other details. Pricing is going to be a bit more than you have listed for a full day. Always have done well with them and they are not afraid to move to find fish. Just fished with them over Thankgsgiving and we couldn't be happier yet again. It is the highlight for my family everytime. You can also rent some fishing gear down there and fish from the beaches and bridges. You can search for them and they have a great HSOforum and a facebook page. You can PM and I can answer any questions. DVD

The keys are great. Good fishing but watch out for the topless ladies lol.

Always had a good time there. I have stayed at bud n Mary's and a place on marathon but can't think of the name off the top of my head. We used to just rent a boat and drown cut bait. We would catch everything. Look up captain bill moore, he fishes the keys. He's a great guy and should be able to put you on some fish. Met him guiding in Alaska this last summer and had the pleasure of fishing with him a few times.

I'm talking to captains down there right now, booking a couple days for our trip the last week of feb. No luck searching for a capt Bill Moore in the keys...do you have any contact info L4C? Is he out of Marathon, or??

Ok the ice was 15-16 inches and less than 2 inches of snow. It’s was -15 this morning and the weekend looks to be cold again. The fish were there but not biting with change in weather.

I guess the vikings are a lot like fishing.  Very entertaining but frustrating at times. I've probably been cheering the vikings for 50 plus years  that i can remember and once again it's all about (there's always next year).

I remember Jeno's boxed pizza years ago.  Mom made it every Saturday night while dad and I watched All Star Wrestling.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is going great on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters reporting thickening ice conditions with two feet of ice in some areas.  Many ice roads are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Some good fishing this past week.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 28 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts do just about everything they can to get customers on fish and this past week, some resorts made some long runs, resetting fish houses in new areas miles off shore.  Most are reporting good fishing as a rule.     It is common to sort through some small walleyes and saugers to get your keepers on LOW.  Naturally, some big fish are showing up, especially in deeper water.  In addition, this has been a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.      Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole. In the jigging hole, a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail in gold / pink, gold / glow red, glow white / pink, or Wonder Bread have worked well.     Especially in the deeper water, some anglers are finding success on rippin raps or using jigging spoons with a rattle as well.     On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well.  One day the jigging line catches most of the fish, the other day a deadstick is hot.     Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts have fish houses set up on various pieces of structure as well as adjacent to structure in deep mud.  A consistent mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees in the mix.     Shallow structure is best right away in the morning and as the sun starts going down in the late afternoon.  Mud is more of a slower bite but all day.   The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts (as of this past week) was open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.  Venmo is also available at all resorts.  Work through your resort for specifics.   Ice fishing is in full swing across Lake of the Woods and there are openings for lodging, fish house rentals, sleeper fish house rentals and meal plans across the area.  Ice fishing is extended on LOW with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st, walleye / sauger season open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes.

From your fingertips to God's ears...  Finally got some snow!   Several inches of new snow fell before and during the weekend.  Sunday eve when we left, the high winds had already begun to create some drifting on the lake.  It was fun riding for sure.  Lots of folks on the lake this past weekend too.  We fueled up the sleds at Shamrock and saw as many people fishing in that area as I've ever seen in the Winter on Lake Vermilion.     Our weekend results were decent.  Jeff and I and a buddy caught probably 50 walleyes between the three of us, mostly fishing a jig/plastics with our three biggest being 24", 25", and 25.5".  We also got one large pike of unknown length.  During the midday on Sunday, we targeted whitefish and Jeff managed one big one.  We released all of our fish, except for three small walleyes that our buddy wanted to bring home for a meal.  Definitely a fun weekend on Lake V!

The Vikings are the Vikings so it's nothing new.  It is kind of sad that Darnold's off season stock is now going to drop like a rock after these last two games. It kind of shows he's not a big game guy.  🤔

I'm blaming leech... his food selection has been lacking game days recently  🤣
