Did I miss the victory party, or is it no longer a wedge issue because the mid terms are over?

Still seems rather out of control in the hotspots. Surprisingly, surrounding countries have so far kept it out. Northern Minnesota should be ok......talked to a guy who was not allowed in deer camp because he recently traveled to Bulgaria and Greece.

Kinda like what APR went through last winter.

I did see a funny one the other week. It said the cure for Ebola was only 50 dead white people away.

Once the number of cases in the u.s. fell to zero it became boring to have only that to report day after day. When the sky doesn't fall, like EVERY doctor said it wouldnt, even the hard core "chicken littles" move on...

Since there is no "Outbreak" there is no drama, no drama, no headlines. Can't sell news when everything is OK.

Red Bulls Heading To Africa To Battle Ebola

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota National Guard is stepping up to help the fight against Ebola.

About 700 men and women with the Rosemount-based 34th Red Bull Infantry Division will be headed to West Africa in the spring.

They are part of more than 2,000 Army National Guard and Army Reserve forces who will help areas hardest hit by the virus. U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel authorized the deployment on Friday.

Col. Mike Wickman with the Minnesota National Guard said he expects a six-month deployment for the 34th Infantry Division.

“This humanitarian mission is not that unusual,” said Wickman, discussing the battle against the contagious and deadly disease. “You have forces that are proven and capable, and … they are fully prepared.”

He said the troops will go through medical training, but they won’t be directly dealing with Ebola patients.

“Our mission is to execute command and control of the various Department of Defense entities that are going to be in that area,” Wickman said. “So the risk is not as great as one would expect.”

Once the mission is complete, they will undergo 21 days of monitoring. They’ll meet with a nurse twice a day and their temperatures will also be taken to make sure they didn’t contract the virus.

This is the second time in the recent past that the 34th Infantry Division has been mobilized. Previously, the Red Bulls were deployed to Iraq to help support Operation New Dawn.

Maj. Darrin Janisch is leaving behind his family in Savage to go on his fourth deployment with the Minnesota National Guard.

“This is very different because it is a humanitarian assistance mission, very different than having boots on the ground and being in combat,” Janisch said.

Ann Janisch said she has become better able to handle the time her husband leaves over the years but it is still very difficult to juggle the responsibilities of having three children.

“We haven’t quite wrapped our heads around it,” she said.

She added sometimes people do not know what to say but kind gestures like helping to mow the lawn or helping with carpool mean a lot to military families with loved ones overseas.

It's back to where it has been for decades. Only reason it made the news is that they are starting to treat in the USA. As with 9/11, I think there is a silver lining to have a couple of health care workers contracting Ebola here.

With 9/11 the scare of chemical weapons, First Responders were forced to become educated and/or trained on how to deal with a lot chemicals. This has increased the awareness and the ability to deal with the daily chemical spills that happen now in a more timely and safe way.

With Ebola is showed that we need to be better educated and trained in protecting the population from diseases. We are lucky it is slow spreading and pretty easy to contain.

What happened to Obama declaring martial law?

I'm sure the next time a case shows up in the US (and it will) the freakout will be reignited and Obama's CDC will be blamed for ineptitude.

When it rains, it pours. Just before unveiling his colossal administrative amnesty for millions of "undocumented" aliens and foreign tech workers on Thursday, President Obama separately ordered up to 8,000 more executive pardons and special work passes for Liberians, Sierra Leoneans and Guineans illegally in this country.

Strange, isn't it? The same administration that refused to enact travel bans from Ebola-plagued West African nations to protect Americans is now granting "temporary protected status" (TPS) to West Africans on American soil so they don't have to go back.

It's not really about public health, of course. It's about political pandering and electoral engineering.

Here's the dirty open secret: There's nothing "temporary" about TPS benefits. Under both Democratic and Republican administrations, the program has become an endless, interminable residency plan for unlawful border-crossers, visa overstayers and deportation evaders from around the world.

Just think how many fewer Americans would have died had the president banned flights from some of those African countries. Oh wait........ crazy

Seems word on the ebola street is that Guinea and Liberia have "somewhat" gotten this under control...meaning that it is not raising exponentially anymore. Still growing, but at a reduced rate, with less mortality. The US is scaling back the numbers of "treatment troops" being sent over as well the originally planned number of facilities and number of beds in each. Since the surrounding countries have so far keep it from spreading does show this disease can be contained. Probably the biggest threat other than the disease itself would be the breakdown of society/lack of central leadership in a infected country. Either of these two could lead to more people getting sick, less treatment, and people panicking and trying to get out, thereby spreading the disease. This is probably the exact reason the 800 guards are being sent...not to fight the disease per se, but rather to try to maintain infrastructure and order. Don't think they will really be in the line of Ebola fire, but not would want that job though, and if I believed in a god, would say god bless them. Will be interesting to see how Mali, a pretty war torn cluster cluck, handles this, as they now have a case where a religious leader came back infected and potentially exposed 500 hundred followers. Suppose though, that number might be dramatized a little as well, with close close contact numbers probably being significantly less.

As far as the travel ban....yeah, tough one, but have to give the nod towards keeping them open, for the reason listed above, that not only do these counties need to medically fight this....they also need to remain stable. Closing them off would hasten if not cause the degradation; and seems like the impact of us dealing with a few cases that do get here with it open would be considerably less than a complete breakdown of one of these countries with potentially millions of infected people spilling out all over.

Oh by the way, the fox news hate obama for everything pundits, and the people lapping it up and regurgitating the talking points......were both being political and needlessly soiling their pants smile

Ok the ice was 15-16 inches and less than 2 inches of snow. It’s was -15 this morning and the weekend looks to be cold again. The fish were there but not biting with change in weather.

I guess the vikings are a lot like fishing.  Very entertaining but frustrating at times. I've probably been cheering the vikings for 50 plus years  that i can remember and once again it's all about (there's always next year).

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is going great on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters reporting thickening ice conditions with two feet of ice in some areas.  Many ice roads are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Some good fishing this past week.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 28 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts do just about everything they can to get customers on fish and this past week, some resorts made some long runs, resetting fish houses in new areas miles off shore.  Most are reporting good fishing as a rule.     It is common to sort through some small walleyes and saugers to get your keepers on LOW.  Naturally, some big fish are showing up, especially in deeper water.  In addition, this has been a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.      Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole. In the jigging hole, a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail in gold / pink, gold / glow red, glow white / pink, or Wonder Bread have worked well.     Especially in the deeper water, some anglers are finding success on rippin raps or using jigging spoons with a rattle as well.     On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well.  One day the jigging line catches most of the fish, the other day a deadstick is hot.     Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts have fish houses set up on various pieces of structure as well as adjacent to structure in deep mud.  A consistent mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees in the mix.     Shallow structure is best right away in the morning and as the sun starts going down in the late afternoon.  Mud is more of a slower bite but all day.   The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts (as of this past week) was open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.  Venmo is also available at all resorts.  Work through your resort for specifics.   Ice fishing is in full swing across Lake of the Woods and there are openings for lodging, fish house rentals, sleeper fish house rentals and meal plans across the area.  Ice fishing is extended on LOW with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st, walleye / sauger season open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes.

From your fingertips to God's ears...  Finally got some snow!   Several inches of new snow fell before and during the weekend.  Sunday eve when we left, the high winds had already begun to create some drifting on the lake.  It was fun riding for sure.  Lots of folks on the lake this past weekend too.  We fueled up the sleds at Shamrock and saw as many people fishing in that area as I've ever seen in the Winter on Lake Vermilion.     Our weekend results were decent.  Jeff and I and a buddy caught probably 50 walleyes between the three of us, mostly fishing a jig/plastics with our three biggest being 24", 25", and 25.5".  We also got one large pike of unknown length.  During the midday on Sunday, we targeted whitefish and Jeff managed one big one.  We released all of our fish, except for three small walleyes that our buddy wanted to bring home for a meal.  Definitely a fun weekend on Lake V!

The Vikings are the Vikings so it's nothing new.  It is kind of sad that Darnold's off season stock is now going to drop like a rock after these last two games. It kind of shows he's not a big game guy.  🤔
