No ice at all on the main lake

Posted

I was told right north of rocky point on the west shore there was ice.

Posted

I live on the west side just south of squaw point and the ice is about half way across our bay. The east side is still wide open. We need a calm cold night for this part of the lake to freeze all the way across.

Nice. Get ready! Heard margaret now has about 5 inches

Pretty windy lately. Gull is mostly wide open. The bays have a little ice. The lakes on the upper chain are gaining ice fast and some guys are out fishing. Sounds like they are catching too!

Hole in the day bay by grand view now has ice as well.

The south end of the lake is now iced over.

Hows the main lake ice coming along on Gull?

one house on hole in day bay today

Posted

As of Saturday, it was at 4" on the north end. Guessing it probably made a couple more the last few days. There's a pressure ridge running from Dutchman's Bluff over past the Flagpole Bar.

Thanks for the info

Out on South end last night for first time. 7 inches where I was near Hunters Point. Didn't get set up until 4:30 and caught 3 nice walleyes in first 15 minutes and lost a good one half way up to the hole. Fished until 6 pm and no action after 5 pm.

I live on the east side overlooking the main bay. Saw the first house on the east side of the main body today.....but can see a few houes on the other side for a couple days. All have been closer to shore. Saw a few in Hole in the Day Bay just in the past few days. I do not have any reports on thickness. No vehicles on the main part of the lake yet.

Lots of vehicles on North Long and a few on Round Lake.....and lots of houses on both.

If anybody's been on the main lake lately I would love to here what kind of ice thickness you are finding.

Posted

I was there last week out of ernies and there was 9-11 inches. made it out to bowtie and 11 inches there is a big ice heave that runs from sandy all the way to around stone boathouse. There are multiple heaves by quarterdeck. Never made it out on north side

Thanks for the info

How's the current ice report looking? Thinking about coming up Wednesday or Thursday? Ice thickness near home in the day bay? How much snow on ice?

Posted

Not sure about hole in the day area, but south end has 12-14" where we drilled. Some full size trucks venturing out. Little to no snow on the ice.

Posted

About the same out of Hole in the Day. A few trucks were driving out to the first break.

Posted

Thanks for all the updates guys. I'm heading up Wednesday for a couple days of fishing, and can't decide what to bring. Portable or permanent? Any opinions? It's a half ton truck with a 14' ice castle.

I would say permanent. I would say by Wednesday it will be 16" of ice on Hole in the day bay. We had 13" yesterday a.m. when we left.

I've only been fishing LOW so far this year with mixed results. We are thinking of not driving so far for the long new years weekend. How has the fishing been on Gull this ice season? I would assume with the big temperature swings the pressure ridges are quite active?

Posted

We had a great start to the season. But over the last week the bite has tapered off. we're still getting 2-3 fish per evening but they are nice fish. The ice is great. So far no significant ice heave problems but that changes daily. Just take your time out there.

Thank you Jason for the report

If anyone is out on the lake tomorrow I would love an update on the ice depth...

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?

but if he really wants I can change the date..

As soon as I started reading mind went to needles and seats.  You might want to try just replacing those first?  I’ve only done that once before in my life but it made the difference.  A carb refresh in 8,000 miles seems reasonable.

Good luck smurfy!  On getting drawn, I mean!   If it comes down to it, I know a guy that might be interested in a nice hide.
