Had a decent opening weekend and saw a fair amount of deer. After sitting almost all day on Saturday of second weekend I was surprised to see all the tracks criss crossing the new snow but no actual deer seen. I'll be heading up on Saturday for what is supposed to be a warmer day. Not sure what strategy to employ. I'm thinking of treating it like opening day and just trying for an all day sit. What are those of you still hunting planning on doing?

Sit in the stand bit, eat well, have a few hot totties in the evening by the fire, pull stands watch the Vik's get spanked and enjoy the company of my buddies! wink

Grouse hunt, F the deer.

A few guys are heading back up. Mostly relax. 6 for 12, all decent bucks, passed all the yearlings. Fairly happy with our hunt. Hunting was much better then we expected.

Will be out Thursday, Sat and Sunday with my 12 year old (yes, he gets a pass on school for thursday smile )

We will be in the stand or ground blind for a couple hours in the AM and PM, and may do some slow stalking mid day. Our area is alot of ridges and ravines, and I scouted out a few places we can sit and overlook a decent amount of hillside/creekbottom. Hoping the wind stays down to help out.

Really hope we can fill his tag by early Saturday AM so I can go to the UMD playoff game in the afternoon.

Play cards and drink beer? We've tagged a few 3rd weekend but its been rare, I've taken to sleeping in and going for a walk to kick something to the other guys, also do a little scouting for next season.

We have been hunting since last Friday the 14th in the Crane lake area sitting a few hours each day and have bagged Three bucks so far. Not hunting very hard. Shot all three deer between 9:30 and 10:30AM. Hunting is better than expected. All deer taken from clear cuts and ground blinds.

Sit at home and leave the deer alone and hope they are bedding down on my property nice and safely while I enjoy a nice bowl of tag soup. Looks like they may be in for another hard winter. I dont need to add to their potential misery.

I like your idea of an all day sit. This year I saw more deer movement during the middle of the day than I even have. Bucks and does out in fields at 1130-12 midday. I had deer come out in my clearing at 1015am and does walking through the woods at 2pm. My brother in law shot his doe last week in a ground blind in a corn field at 230pm. If you can handle it I would pick a spot with lots of tracks/sign and sit for the long haul as hard as it may be. I think this colder weather and snow has them moving at all times of the day, even if its just moving between bedding areas or going out for a midday snack. Good luck!

2-3 of us head out about 9am and do some walking. Wouldn't call it driving deer but we walk areas and from years of experience have a general idea where they may go. Every few years we get one this way and since nobody else is in the woods we just have some fun trying to outfox a deer. It usually goes they other way but we have a good time doing it.

I'm sure 90% of the deer either stay put in the swamps or bail somewhere never to be seen but in our area it beats sitting for 4-6 hours a day. We sit at night for a while usually if the timing works out.

A few beverages, a fire in fireplace, and some great chow top off the day.

From what I saw last weekend, I figured they were in full winter survival mode already. Most of the poplar tree/browsing areas I was in didn't get much new sign after mid-week. Most fresh activity and deer we ran into were in dense cedars.

Activity seemed to be getting condensed to fewer trails leading to/from these areas and on the shortest route to the best food in the area.

I don't know if the break in the temps will loosen them up a little but I think they're committed to the pattern. IF I go, I'll plan to hunt pines, cedars, heavy swamp cover where they can get out of the wind. Tough hunting but I think it holds the most promise for actually seeing deer in the daylight hours.

Good luck!

The weekend weather is supposed to be warmer in area 183. I plan to sit the AM and probably still hunt the ridges. I took a nice buck the Weds after opener, this weekend will be checking sign and trying to bump deer for my hunting buddies. I may move a few stands as well. Good luck if you're in the woods!

I'm still trying to figure out what to do. Looks like it will be pretty warm compared to how it's been. I have a 20 acre plot with mostly birch and a lot of big oaks. No cedar or evergreens of any kind. I do have patches of smaller swampy areas. The doe I shot had a stomache full of browse, no corn despite some fields about a half mile away. Tracks criss cross the property since the snow but no major patterns seen. I do have a ground blind set between two swampy areas that I am thinking I will sit in. Just hoping I haven't scared everything out of there. Just not able to pinpoint where they are bedding or feeding right now.

Well my last weekend die has been cast.

I spent the week debating on heading back north but am now under a warm set of blankets, drinking coffee and watching country music videos. Learning how to party, move on from one relationship to another and praise The Lord the whole time. grin

Time to catch up on some work and chores that have been ignored the past two months. A couple venison steak dinners this week and ducks marinating for today. It's good to be cozy. Gotta refill my coffee now.

Enjoy the weekend guys!

Slow this am in 183. No deer yesterday , I'm guessing they were scared to move in that wind . At least it's warmer today. Couple big scrapes opened up sometime from last Sunday to today.

I am done hunting because I filled my tag,but sometimes being able to hunt the whole season in the big woods is just rewarding. Miss not being out there.

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?

but if he really wants I can change the date..
    • Wanderer
As soon as I started reading mind went to needles and seats.  You might want to try just replacing those first?  I’ve only done that once before in my life but it made the difference.  A carb refresh in 8,000 miles seems reasonable.

Good luck smurfy!  On getting drawn, I mean!   If it comes down to it, I know a guy that might be interested in a nice hide.
