Well looks like we will get a chance to get out on the ice early this year. I have not been as dilligent watching the freeze over on Forest this year due to deer hunting. I drove by the lake the other day and it appears that 1st is locked up and has been since Friday and there should be walkable ice by this weekend with the cold temps. Please be careful when venturing out and take safety precautions on the early ice. If any of you venture out please report back and let us know what kind of ice conditions you found on any of the area lakes you fished and post them here. Thanks, be safe and tightlines!

I might do some poking around to see if the ice is ok, if it is I might try and get out there this weekend on flake.

There was a 1/2 dozen people in the channel on Chisago. A guy said there was 3 or 4 inches. Still some open water spots on S. Lindstrom. Green had been iced over a few days ago, then it opened up a little.

What about Pokegama? Any ice? Anybody fishing?

Pokegema lake is completely iced over.

No idea how thick.

Seen a man walking (with a fishing sled in tow) out about 1/4 mile from shore on Clear Lake near Forest lake...

Pretty brave... confused

4.5 to 5 inches 40 yards out from the first lake access on forest!!! Hitting her up tomorrow!!

I also saw the guys out on clear in there portables!!!

This morning was the first morning that Chisago had skim ice all the way across.. Be safe!

Looking to walk out somewhere in the Chisago area this weekend. Anybody know if any of the smaller lakes like Little or Kroon have safe walkable ice yet?

Posted

If I remember correctly, little lake winter killed last year. Might what to consider another lake eek

Posted

Yep, Little winterkilled, as well as a heap of other small lakes and some larger ones (Notably North Center).

Be careful friends.. Rumor has it someone went through the ice just outside the channel on Chisago.

crazy

It is fun to sit in a warm truck or car a to watch a tip up out in Chisago channel 1st ice, but should not clog up the landing.

It is only a matter of time until help is really needed an 1st responders will be delayed while cars or trucks are moved.

See this practice off an on every year.

Have done it myself when no one around an am one of the guys out on the skinny ice, just away from channel.

At least leave room for this, just in case.

.....so far luck has been on the side of the fishermen on the NEW ice.

Any way.....think about it.

Keep on Rocken!

I have a friend who lives on West Rush and he said he fished in front of his place on Sunday over 5 inches of ice but on Monday he noticed some significant open water 200 yards out which has since refroze. This spot is obviously going to be thin and dangerous so keep it close to shore for a while and stay safe Fellas.

Dinnerbell. 7 inches with tape where I set up. Got 3 sunnies and a tiny crappie. Kept none. Saw a decent pike on cam. Would not bite. After dark all lookers, no bites. A word of warning to anyone with sled, wheeler or car traffic later on. There is a pressure ridge running from Northwest to southeast. From Rose hill it goes past the point/park and i could not see how far. Ice is heaved up in some spots that will stop your sled dead in its track. It would be like hitting a spearing block. Not a good scene.

6 inches on Forest yesterday and it was cracking pretty good anytime some one would move or drill a hole. A few sleds and atvs running around. Be careful as with all the cracking it sure didn't seem that solid.

North end of Big Marine has 5.5" of nice clear ice as of yesterday evening. Picked up some nice crappies on Friday evening, went back to the same exact spot Saturday evening and couldn't hardly buy a bite.

Posted

Back to dinnerbell today. Not a bite. Moved closer to the pressure ridge and the ice was only 5". Saw a pike and an eye on cam. School of crappies came through too. Nothin even slowed down to look. Just swimming. Cold front. Right ?

Headed out on Forest Lake from the Willow point launch on Saturday. Measured 7.25 to 8 inches out to where we fished. Good day fishing too. 12 flags, 6 caught, 4 keeper pike.

Went out to the eagles nest and A frame last night on Chisago and had 9-10" everywhere.

Was out on Comfort yesterday. Pretty much 8-9" everywhere EXCEPT!!! The mid East portion all the way South to Hwy. 8, toward the channel to Little Comfort is open water. Ive never seen it like that. I'm guessing; but the water level is higher on the Sunrise branch than I've seen it in a decade.

Thanks for the report! That is weird, does it travel the whole length???

Peltier. Not in our Forum but still consider it local. 9 and 10 inches with a tape.Couple tiny perch, hammer handle. Saw a mid 30ish pike and 2 small sunnies on cam. Slow. Moved 5 times. From sunrise to 1:00pm.

Had 9 to 11 inches on a small lake today. As much as 2 inches of water ontop of ice in spots. Was a bonus for me, someone had dumped their minnows on the ice earlier in the morning, but they were all swimming around smile Sometimes it's nice to leave the lake with more minnows than you left with! Water was swirling into the holes. In some spots, objects (rocks, sand, ect) had melted completely through the ice. Looked more like lake march, than mid december!

Those flooding problems are a sign of your needle and seat are leaking.  If the needle has a ring around the tip you can clean it if it's brass. If it has a black rubber tip then it needs to be replaced. You can clean the needle and seat with things like rubbing compound or even toothpaste I use a product called Semi chrome. It for polishing die pins. Just clean them up after polishing.

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?
