Best auger for wheelhouse

What is the best auger for a wheelhouse?

I am really looking at the Clamplate with a 8 inch auger .

I won't be drilling more than 8 holes . And I don't want a big mess in the house either.

Help! smile

I like my jiffy pro 4 propane. Very little emissions in the wheel house and can also use with the portable.

Any electric will do.

buddy really likes his jiffy propane auger. cuts quick and little to no fumes, i was always worried about propane becuase of it getting cold out with my portable, for for a perm, a pretty slick machine. always starts too!!

I also have the same question. I was looking into the strikemaster big volt mainly because I wanted to stay with electric and have a 10 inch hole. Anybody have any reviews with the big volt 10 inch auger? My next option I would go with is the jiffy propane.

I have used my old Jiffy md 30 8 inch for 15 yrs and 2 yrs ago went to Syn oil. And have not looked back. Runs clean with no fumes and starts great.

I drill 8 holes in mine every time out and leave my house up when I drill my holes. There is no mess in the house and when I lower to the ice it seals real good.

But I take my house home every time I leave the lake

New ION with reverse and 10in drill unit. smile

I bought the ION two years ago because of the house. I like it. It drills fast but does not throw as much snow as my gas. No mess and it can drill many more holes than I need. It is also better for opening up holes. I wanted the 3 inch because of my grandchild. She only hit the hole 4 times last year. The only thing I learned was when near opening the hole to slow a little so it did not get stuck. The reverse model would solve this. I like the no mess. Even with amsoil their was still stink in the house.

If you go the clam plate route you'll want the milwaukee 18 fuel brushless hammer drill with 750lbs of tourque

That Millwaukee drill has 750 inch pounds torque. Convert to ft lbs and its only 62.5. If you can make it work, the 18volt dewalt high torque impact has 300 foot pounds.

An impact is different then a drill. Can an impact be put onto the clam plate?

Was at cabelas this weekend looking for the big volt. I was told that SM discontinued the auger. You can still get them in other big stores and online.

Yes the impact is different. Not sure if it would work or not. Probably have to make some kind of adapter to fit. Then again it would probably start "impacting" as soon as your auger started to cut. May be too loud and not spin fast enough.

Last year I bought a Big Volt for my Ice Cabin. Because the battery is sealed under the couch I bought a Ranger style trolling motor plug and 2 female ends. Cut the battery cables off and mounted the trolling motor plug onto the auger cables. I mounted the female into the panel and wired it in. I used the other female to connect the cut off battery cables so I can use it outside with a battery if needed. Last year this was the only option available if one wanted a 10" hole in an electric. Works great and has a ton of power yet the new Ion is pretty interesting. The big volt is pretty fool proof but has limitations if you need to drill holes outside. I see a like new Big Volt on hsolist for around $225, that's a pretty good deal.

Those flooding problems are a sign of your needle and seat are leaking.  If the needle has a ring around the tip you can clean it if it's brass. If it has a black rubber tip then it needs to be replaced. You can clean the needle and seat with things like rubbing compound or even toothpaste I use a product called Semi chrome. It for polishing die pins. Just clean them up after polishing.

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?
