We are heading up this weekend to hunt the park and spend some money in the local area. First time there. Any comments or advice? Any areas known to hold more deer than others? I see the north end is considered "rugged". I'd like to hear from those that have hunted the park before or are just familiar with it to help with the lay of the land. Unfortunately, we'll be walking in for the first time Saturday morning in the dark so any direction would be much appreciated. Hunting with my son and hoping he at least sees something after a long weekend last week of seeing zip in our regular hunting spot. Can't wait to get up there. Should be beautiful.

One more thing. If anyone has any dining suggestions in the Two Harbors/Split Rock area, please let me know. I want to enjoy some north shore food. Any local specialty foods would be a bonus. Thanks again.

I have not done the hunt, but places I like to eat in the area are:

Splashing Rock Restaurant at Grand Superior Lodge

Northern Lights Cafe in Beaver Bay (try the Hunter's Pie)

Vanilla Bean in Two Harbors

Lemon Wolf Cafe

Im assuming talking parks and hunting are usually hush hush...that's what its like at the parks that I hunt. I for one am pretty secretive on my spots (just like fishing), that's why your probably not getting responses. Look for areas that show no sign of man (cars, atvs, etc) I would start there. Good luck

Judy's Cafe is great for breakfast in Two Habors

I don't understand the lack of passing along some ideas or even areas to key in on considering only 35 permits given out. Any way I appreciate the dining options and advice on the hunt. I'll let you know how we do.

Day 1. Hit a doe. Tracked it til we jumped it. Going to let lay tonight and track again. Saw a couple more. No other shots.

Given they only hand out 35 permits I'm guessing there just aren't many people that have hunted the area so not many people who have the info you are looking for.

Regardless I bet it was an interesting hunt with some interesting terrain and nice scenery.

Great weekend hunting the state park. Stayed at Camp 61 in Beaver Bay. Very nice motel with attached restaurant. If you are in the area hunting, I would highly recommend. It was nice having food and room in same place. Hunting was good. My son experienced sunrise over superior and with the cold weather the fog and clouds over the water were spectacular. Sunday, we got a nice big doe and a yearling male and missed on two others. There are definitely deer in the park. Terrain was amazing and with all the birch trees it was neat to see. Going up and over the ridges was a real workout. Key was finding a ridge to sit on overlooking natural funnels between the ridges. Seemed to be more sign on southern end of the park. More hunters too but I think that kept them moving. Great weekend spent with my son and my friend.

Those flooding problems are a sign of your needle and seat are leaking.  If the needle has a ring around the tip you can clean it if it's brass. If it has a black rubber tip then it needs to be replaced. You can clean the needle and seat with things like rubbing compound or even toothpaste I use a product called Semi chrome. It for polishing die pins. Just clean them up after polishing.

All of those Polaris sleds from that era were notorious for flooding and leaking. I've still got a 2003 XCSP 600 Edge that my daughter rides. As you noted, you need to shut off the fuel in those situations.

Yes, but it could make for an amazing walleye opener.

How old is your belt?   My old Polaris 4 wheeler with belt drive was bogging at mid range to top end last year.  Changed the belt and that problem went away.

Previous owner (22 years and 5,000 miles ago) said it was prone to flooding when sitting for a long time or trailering, so I shut the fuel off in both cases.   Primary is significantly worn.  I replaced several rollers and pins which helped.  I have two used clutches in much better condition that I could (and should) install.   It seems more like when I hit the throttle, but the bog could be from poor clutch shifting.  Will have to pay attention next time and inspect the clutches.  Thanks for the ideas.

Nope, he beat me fair and square, all his.  This weather had been depressing. As it sits now we are looking at a later than normal ice out. I hate scrabbling with docks, lifts, boats right before opener. Also limits some pre opener crappie chances.

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?
