Who runs old motors here? I picked up a completely rebuilt '54 Johnson 5.5. It is a great little motor. Light weight power . Great fishing motor. Those 50s motors are full of character! And reliable!

Nothing THAT old! LOL. But I run a 1988 200HP Yamaha V6. She purrs like a giant angry kitty.

I'm trying to find a good 4hp 2 stroke-no luck yet.

I run a 1957 5.5 hp Johnson Fishermen in my 65' alumacraft. I get more looks using that boat than my newer Lund. What kind of condition is your tank in? I had to replace my rusted tank with a new one that I purchased and restored on hsolist. They are great little motors if you can keep your tank in good shape!! If your tank is in good shape treat it like a baby, if not expect to spend $200+ for a decent tank. Also keep the tank locked up! I have had one stolen:( I know there is a kit that you can buy so you are able to use new tanks, but not worth the investment IMO

my tank was rebuilt with new gaskets and fitting with new o rings! I am just looking for a light weight 14ft boat now. grin

The oldest I have is an evinrude 1962 5.5hp. It is probably the best running engine I have ever seen. The funny thing is I have had 2 old motors with points ignition, and 2 with CDI ignition. Both my newer CDI motors have failed me, one during a rain storm. I have not had a single problem with points.

I have 2 old Johnson 5.5's. one think is a '55 that I bought when I was in 8th grade and one that my dad gave me is a '57. Haven't ran them in years, but they bring back good memories when I see them in the garage.

I have 1941-1942 Johnson with the original cardboard box. It is a TD 15 I never looked up the rest of the numbers. I bought it to display in my down stairs living room. I am now looking for Johnson motor stand, but they are hard to come by.

What good is a motor to look at? Mine pulls double duty as a kicker and on the duck boat.

I love running mine. When these 50s motors where sold by omc they said it would be the last motor you would have to buy . All parts are available as well

1967 45 HP chrysler is bullet proof. Been running great for the 20 years I have owned it and is easy to take apart and fix. I rebuild the carb and fuel pump every 4 years and have nad no problem with it. Also a 1971 4.5 HP merc kicker. Same thing. Runs awesome.

I have a '57 7.5hp Johnson. Has not been used for 20 years but still runs. I pull it out of the garage every now and then and it starts after a few pulls. Needs some carb work. Don't have any use for it at the time. Should have it restored someday.

A 62 Evinrude Fisherman 6 hp here, lower unit has been rebuilt & made into a long shaft. It starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull when we get it out.

I have 4 oldies that we use for our duck hunting fleet....two Johnson 5.5 motors 55 and 56 vintage and a Johnson 10 horse 1956 and an Evinrude 10 horse 56 or 57 I believe. I have rebuilt all the carbs and lower units with new water pumps and seals etc... they are dead on reliable for sure and pretty much bulletproof! I have three tanks I use, and three others in reserve for the future...I don't know where you would have to buy tanks for $200....I haven't spent more than 10 bucks for one yet. I did order the new ethanol resistant hoses for them though...if you keep a cold pressurized gas tank in a warm workshop, those old hoses give out...and make a stinky mess! It took almost 6 months to get that smell gone!

I have a 55 Johnson 10hp and an 59 Evinrude 3hp. Both run well and are used every year. I feel like a time traveler when I backtroll with them !

I have a 1963 5.5hp Seahorse that I use on my 12' boat, but also found a mouse-infested 1957 3hp Johnson at a garage sale a few years ago. I cleaned it up, replaced everything inside, and it runs like a top.

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

If you stop by Kramer lake on 38 north of Rapids someone made a chair out of a hospital commode and a lunch tray. Been there for 20 years.
