Sooo....75 deer harvested by 2530 hunters, that accurate? How does that compare to previous hunts?

Posted

I meant the first main hunt, which I guess was actually the second hunt.

Only 14 bucks harvested older than 1.5 years old.

I always thought it was about twice that

No, it was the same 12 hundred and something hunters both days. Still very poor success.

2000 more will go in this weekend. Or there were 2000 permits given, fewer will show up.

Not that many hunters for just one of the hunts, maybe combined.

Just going off my failing memory......half of recent year for harvest, with 25% less hunters, (and 10%? less land to hunt.)

Historically about a harvest of 100 most years, but with a few more hunters, and a little more land to hunt.

I am surprised at the harvested doe/buck ratio as I would think most in this hunt are go big trophy or go home empty.

How does this hunt work? Are hunters assigned places within Ripley to hunt? In my mind I picture something like Supermarket Sweep where a buzzer goes off it's a mad-dash by all the participants to get to find a spot and hang their stand.

I'm sure it's more organized than that. Or at least I hope so.

You have to get inline the line is about a mile long you can arrive the day before and camp which most do. Then the next morning they open the line up and its like supermarket sweep to find your spot. To be honest the two years I went it wasn't to hard finding a spot it was more if we moved mid day trying to find a spot was a pain in certain parts.

From MDHA via facebook:

Mild conditions greet hunters during first Camp Ripley hunt

Archers took a two-day total of 75 deer during the first two-day bow hunt at Camp Ripley Military Reservation near Little Falls on Oct. 15-16, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said.

There were 1,805 permits issued for the first hunt, with 1,282 hunters participating. Hunter success was 6 percent (down 2 percent from last year for the first hunt).

“This was one of two large archery hunts this year at Camp Ripley,” said Beau Liddell, Little Falls area wildlife supervisor for the DNR. “Hunters apply in advance for these hunts, which have become an annual tradition.”

Greg Meinert of Rice, and Juan Valencia of Elk River, each took bucks tipping the scales at 207 pounds. Of adult does registered, the largest weighed in at 128 pounds, taken by Daniel Myrum of Pierz.

The second two-day hunt is scheduled for Oct. 25-26. The DNR coordinates the hunts with the Department of Military Affairs, which manages the 53,000-acre military reservation.

Someone mentioned there's 10% less land to hunt. Where are the new no hunting/impact areas?

Boy, sure is inviting to go on this hunt. confused

Thats pathetic. Maybe it was the wind, rain and corn.

Guess people should just hunt harder and longer. whistle

Well my dad and I are still going to go this weekend. We discussed that the lower number could be to the confusion about the bonus tag issue and guys holding out for a big buck. The last few times at the camp we caught some slack for taking out does and doe fawns, but they wanted to reduce the numbers so we helped out. My dad will be holding out for a big buck, but me I am game for the first deer that gives me a good shot.

Also for any of you attending the 2nd hunt and would like to shoot the breeze. I think I will try to hit the watering hole on base not sure on what time yet seeing I will be waiting on old man to get his gear before we head up on Friday night. Saturday I believe they hold a dinner for something and that is where I will be eating. Good Luck Hunters may Mr. Big be yours

I thought the minnesota deer hunters association did or something for the vets. Anyone know for sure

They have a hunt for vets before the youth hunt a couple weeks ago

I just checked and the MDHA puts on a dinner in the evening.

My question was rhetorical....the only entity that wanted to ruin the Ripley hunt was one guy...Beau Liddell, the DNR area manager. Ripley officials have been concerned about the lower numbers and lower quality of animals coming out of Camp. At one time it was truly a world class hunt. No longer.

7 deer taken on the disabled vet hunt and 9 taken on the deployed soldier hunt

It's not just that area sadly, a lot of areas have been miss managed. However it really shows at ripley with such a big area and controlled hunts.

I agree.

There are also areas with very, very good area managers who value the deer herd and recognize the economic importance of keeping a huntable population of deer around.

I do not think that they are concearned about providing anyone with a quality deer hunt in ripley. The purpose of the hunt is to thin and keep the herd at a level that does not hinder the people that train there. This hunt is a way that they can do this. Camp Ripley is a training area first and foremost. Hence the Wed/Thurs. hunt.

I think the MDHA sold burgers last year and had some breakfast stuff in the mornings.

Seriously how do deer hinder people that train here?

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

If you stop by Kramer lake on 38 north of Rapids someone made a chair out of a hospital commode and a lunch tray. Been there for 20 years.
