Pitter Patter Lets Get at Er -- College Hockey Chatter

It's tough. I wonder if it was like this when they split the WCHA up last time to make the CCHA. That at least seems to make more sense than this big 10 fiasco.

About what I expected.

That was St Clouds super bowl I knew they would play well against us.

They pretty much throttled us up there.

I thought we out played them here although we had some sloppy stretches during the game.

On a side note the Sioux beat Airforce in OT....wait a minute AF has a real hockey team? grin

Wilcox has not been playing well. Has me concerned. I wonder if all the "hobey" talk is going to his head? He doesnt seem like the type that would let something like that be a distraction, but I have not been impressed thus far.

SCSU definitely was more prepared. Their schedule had them ready to play. The Gophers havent played anyone yet.

I dont care about polls and an early loss is good IMO.

I agree on Wilcox, I hope he isn't thinking about which team he will pick to play for in the NHL, because if he doesn't focus he won't have to worry about it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Predictions this week for Dogs v Gophers in a home and home? Dogs surprised me last week by sweeping St Cloud. Hoping our Goalie is a little more prepared this time than in South Bend in his first game.

Hard to win in Mariucci, but I'm going with the Dogs earning a split by winning in the oil can. Toninato lights the lamp at least once.

Wilcox will turn it around soon I'm sure. Great goalie thats just going through a rough patch.

Dogs v Gophers is always a good battle. Even though I dont like home and home series, since they only play once, I am glad it is a home and home. I see one lopsided game and one close one. I agree Solbes, a split is on the horizon.

Sitting back and enjoying the dogs sweep over the Gophers.... did get a little interesting there in the last few minutes of Saturdays game and of course it is always interesting having to listen to the visitors radio call of the game.. Hope we see the Gophers again down the road, has to be some kind of way they would meet in the playoffs if both teams manage to get that far.

Dogs suprised me again, though the Gophers not playing too hard on Friday had a lot to do with it. Wilcox played really well on Saturday I thought.

I see a weekend series at Houghton that is very important for the Dogs in a few weeks. Black and Yellow Huskies are 10-0 (wow!)

They are playing well.

I missed Saturday nights Gopher/Dogs game. Did the Gophers show up or was it like Fridays game.

I am glad they are no longer#1. Takes some of the pressure off but everyone gets up to play them anyways. The only #1 that matters is the last one of the year.

I would love to see the Sioux move into first place, but the #3 team did not split. They won in OT against Maine and beat Connecticut as far as I know. I hope you are right Bryce but I think BU moves into first and we hold 2nd.

Polls are for trolls. I could care less what my team is ranked until it matters. The rankings come March mean a whole lot more. Be ready to play come playoffs. Lots of "our" teams are playing inconsistent now. Need to shore that up to beat the East.

Its still kinda fun to be #1 though. What's the deal with these teams though? They are all over the place. From what I've seen no one is playing consistent. UND and SCSU split. UMD riding high split in NE. Michigan tech lasts a week at 1 then gets swept at home after being undefeated? The gophers lost to the U 18 team? Sheesh. Lots of work to do.

I have no doubt UND will be flying high come playoff time and the gophers should beat up on the big ten (6) once they start those games but inconsistency is the name of the game now.

Well I always laugh at other teams who drop a game to USNDP, so ha ha on the Gophs for dropping a game to the kids.

One word, parity.

Its been that way for a while now.

And ratings/pairwise are very very important in college hockey.

And ratings/pairwise are very very important in college hockey.

And those non-conference games become strangely important to pairwise ranking later on in the year. Is it wrong for me to want the Dogs to avoid playing the Goph's in a rematch at the North Star Cup (currently up 2-1)?

Season is just getting rolling.

The strength of schedule plays a role too and you guys are solid so im going to say yeah you are wrong. A loss to a better team like the gophers who all teams really get pumped up to play is better than a loss to lower level club.

And of course winning solves everything.

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
