Am I the only one surprised by Kuemper getting the nod? I guess I thought Backs being the guy putting in the time and really doing all he could do in net in the games he played that he would be the guy.

Not that I am disappointed at all because Kuemper surely is capable, but I figured Backs would get the nod due to being "all in" from the start.

not to mention I read Backs is 24-7-3 all-time vs. the Avs with a 2.25 goals-against average and .924 save percentage but Kemps won 3 critical games in the playoffs against the Avs so maybe Yeo thinks he has their number.

30 hours till GAME TIME!!!!!

I read somewhere that Kuemper has been sharp in practice and has a "swagger" about him right now. We'll see.

Looks like Suter and Brodin are back on the top pair together. I hope Brodin brings some magic this year.

I'm betting no gong show too. I wish but Bickel is going to be a scratch and like mentioned above, Bordeleau is hurt so it should be some Euro hockey. On that note, I hope we get to see Wrecker in a few games this year, the west is full of heavyweights, Bordeleau, Reaves, Mcgrattan, Scott etc that would love to end someone's season and Roy is a dirty coach. If we lose Granlund or Brodin to a knee on knee or a late hit, we very well might miss the playoffs.. The west is that good and I think it's be real close come April.

I think Kuemper gets the home start based on his preseason performance, and Backstrom has been lights out at the Pepsi Center, so I bet he starts Saturday. Plus they don't play for like a week after the first two games (which is lame) so I doubt they want him getting stale not playing in a game for two weeks plus.

I'd love to see Kuemper just step up and take the net, personally. Hoping Backstrom can get back to form. He can be very very good, but he never looked comfortable at all last season, and apparently was never really healthy.

I expect we see Bickel when we play St. Louis, etc. He can throw 'em. I'd rather see Bickel as he can at least play an effective shift. I don't know that Wrecker can do much beyond get in a punch-up.

ya I don't know either. In the St. Louis game, he only got 4 mins of ice time. All I know is if they call him up, I'm dropping everything and going to the game because we all know what he'll be up for.

Good news if bourdeleau out. I missed that. I hate that brand of hockey. Best on best lace em up shifts every 45 seconds and balls out the whole time.

Glad Yeo practiced 6-5!!!

Our 4th could be too if Zucker gets some space.

Cooke up on the 2nd, huh? We'll see how long that lasts. My guess is that happened specifically to take that 3rd line and make it dangerous.

I had the jersey on today, but it got too hot in the lab...and I found out our Sr Dir of HR is in today....sooooo eek

Is it just me or does our 3rd line look extremely dangerous.

grin

love love that 3rd line! That's the 3 guys I wanted to see together a bunch last year. They should be fun to watch!

Really like these combos. Lots of interchangeable pieces here and I think Yeo has to be grinning from ear to ear with what Fletch the mad scientist put together. Sky is the limit. Like Yeo said we could contend for the cup or miss the playoffs. Its that tough in the West.

Lets get off to a fast start by beating these Avs.

Anyone know the Av's lineup for tonight? I looked a couple places, found nothing.

I'm guessing Iggy plays on the second line.

What a game last night. Colorado's defense was terrible but still, good to see the Wild come out of the gates like that.

HOLY COW! What a statement.

They outshot the Avs 48-16 and outplayed them all game. I'm still trying to figure out if they're that good or the Avs played that bad? The top line looked great and Granlund is a Superstar, some of the plays he made had me rewinding the DVR!

The best part of the entire game was Pierre McGuire asking when the Globe Trotters' theme song was going to come on after we had possession for about 3 straight minutes in the third. laugh

I think next game the Avs might have a little fire under their a$$es.

I think it was a combination of the Wild coming out Amped up to play, and Colorado coming out flat.

I would bet Roy will have a pretty big fire lit under there hind quarters today at practice.

Varlamov looked like he needed to call his Mommy to make him feel better. Man what a fun game to watch. Blood was in the water in the second and everyone was finishing!

I can't remember ever seeing this much depth on a Wild roster. That alone is very comforting and encouraging. Not changing the goalie situation during the off season leaves me feeling uncomfortable.

Call the engraver smile

No way the Wild is that good, and no way the Avs are that bad, but man what a fun way to start the season...

Very encouraging to see them pick up with the same intensity they had late last season. To me that starts and ends with Parise. Man does that guy ever have a motor. Just remarkable how hard he works shift in and shift out.

Also really, really nice to see the D chipping in some offense. If that keeps up all year...

Really, really curious to see where the Avs go this season. Loads of talent there but I thought all last season there was some smoke and mirrors to their results, and Varly had to be stellar night in and night out. Have to wonder if they can sustain it. With a preseason that was apparently awful, then a stinker on opening night, have to wonder if it gets in the heads of some of their young guys.

Anyone else notice how slow Iginla looked last night?

Looked like Colorado was tied to a post while they were in their own zone.

We always had the puck and had a guy or two flying to the net.

Iginla was a non-factor. He just wasn't what he used to be, at least last night. Maybe that's just a bad game, maybe we lucked out coming in second in the Iginla FA race this summer.

Vanek looked like he was trying too hard at some points. He needs to ignore where he is and just play. No goofy behind the back passes, no shoveling the puck off to be unselfish, just go do what you do, the way you've always done it. I'm sure he'll settle in and be fine.

Not only does Parise out work everyone on the ice, but he's very smart/sneaky about how he does it. Look at his goal. He pauses and waits for the defender to move, then fires a low shot and uses the fact that the defender already started moving to get around him and get a couple more shots off with positive results. Watching it in slow-mo, it was even more impressive than at first.

I fell asleep after the 2nd, but it sounded like the 3rd pretty much went like the first two. So...how about Roy throwing out the 4th liners at the end? Maybe his thought process is, "if you can't beat them, hurt them."

The upcoming swing through Cali should he a good test. ANA and LAK are both better teams than COL. should be fun to watch, just wish I didn't have to wait 5 days.

In other news, TSN decided to "improve" thier internet presence to "optimize" it for mobile use...it is now completely useless. Either they had no article on the game, or I couldn't navigate to it. mad

Good start to the season, didn't think I would enjoy beating the avs again and again and again but ya I like it.

I have said it earlier the Avs are going to fall this year. So much of last year was Varlamov playing out of his mind. Now you have teams who know how to shut down MacKinnon. They lose their best offensive player to the blues and replace him with a guy who needs a walker. Impressive couple of games by the wild but a bigger test coming up starting Friday.

Brodin signs 6 yr extension with wild worth $25M. I have to think could and Haula are not far behind. This seems like a decent deal for all parties.

We've got 15mil in cap space next year...we have to resign Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, Erik Haula, Marco Scandella and Christian Folin. So we could average 3mil/guy and be right up against the cap while still needing potentially a couple of forwards and a defenseman. This might get tough around February.

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.
