I have 3 friends coming in from out of state to go ice fishing in Jan. Any recommendations on a resort and how soon do I need to reserve. Thanks!!

If you would like the date you r looking for, I would do it asap to make sure you get exactly what you would like.

I would check out Porta-Villa on the south side of the lake. Their houses and their services would be hard to duplicate on URL.

They do book faily fast along with some others so now would be a great time to check it out.

Porta Villa is and has been a great supporter of this HSOforum for years and there ad with the link to their HSOforum is located at the top of this page. Porta Villa has nice heated bathrooms and about everything else one would need and they try very hard to keep their rentals over a good bite.

Chris and the gang go all out to make sure it happens for every customer as well as they can.

I've always had good luck with Justin from up north fish house rentals out of rogers resort. Nice modern clean houses plus great mid week specials.

I would look at booking fast and probably look at Red Lake Remote ice fishing....new concept to the lake for this season, one of a kind operation backed by a local expert. Google it.

I am sure this would impress your friends and make it a memorable adventure. You can look at bookings online to see what fits your plan.

caps and 3 exclamimation points...why didn't I think of that???

Seriously, it looks like a heck of a good idea...I think I have a pretty good idea where that private access is...:)

Neat to here track transportation to remote shacks is coming to Red.

The big downfall of a public lake though....... those nice remote shacks will be surrounded by little blue and red and green fabric thingies in all but the worst of weather.

Were are you finding info on this?

Nothing better than being out on the lake and being all by yourself. I hope it is a great success for them. I am sure it will be. Sure looks like lots of fun.

It has to be better as every other rental on Red has a public road plowed to the front door.

I bet he saves a lot of money not having to repair transmissions, plows and pull trucks out of the water.

The cost of running three track machines actually works out about the same as plowing and maintaining multiple miles of road. Fuel consumption will be pretty high from all the trips back and forth transporting clients, and the older Tucker Sno-Cats are not known for good fuel economy or speed. Not to mention clam steer fully oscillating tracks are not known to be light on maintenance. On the plus side, they are lighter, smoother and have better slush and ridge crossing capabilities than the faster Bombardiers, Bullies or other two track machines that are popular where outfitters need to transport 10-30 miles, my runs will be ½ to 3 mile trips making the slower machine more acceptable.

The main objective of Red Lake Remote is purely a quality of fishing goal. We will be able to quickly mobilize to where the fish are biting without the hindrance of road, ice and weather conditions. Snow, slush, storms and other obstacles will not be as detrimental to where we fish or when we go there. Road outfitters have a logistics nightmare of making sure clients can get their personal vehicles and equipment back and forth safely 24/7 while trying to keep rental houses on fish, private wheelhouses on fish and keep everybody from crowding together or wrecking the roads all while mother nature is trying to bury them. That is why road operators charge a well-earned road fee. With the remote approach I can focus on just my sleepers, just my clients and of course the fish. If a major snowstorm or wind is bearing down on Red Lake it will be very little concern for me, my clients can get back and forth no matter how tall the snow drifts get.

It will not be for everybody, actually only a small percentage of anglers are willing to leave their vehicles on shore and head out all by themselves to remote locations. No trips to the bar, running to town out of boredom or other options having a vehicle on the ice gives an angler. Red Lake Remote clients are the anglers, groups or families that want to come up and concentrate on catching a bunch of fish in a more relaxed, peaceful and private atmosphere for a day or two and then head home. I feel I have successfully designed a simple and purposely small operation that can cater to those looking for something a little different, now we just need the ice to form up. cool

Very interesting and I think there is a market for it but like you said it won't be for everybody as many like the access to the vehicles. How are you going to feel though when you and your clients are out in the middle of nowhere and someone on a snowmobile comes and sets up 100yds away or even 50yds away from your shack? I know I would shake my head but you know it is inevitable that it will happen....Good Luck with the new endeavour!

It is not about keeping others away, it is about putting my clients on the best spots I can. People will follow no matter what happens. Thing is guys willing to put in the effort to push that far out with a portable are my kind of poeple, good for them.

Red Lake Remote ice fishing

Looks awesome Jonny! Love the concept!

I hear ya Jonny and I hope the best for your new adventure! Good Luck and maybe I can convince some of my buddies to avoid the bar and go to where we can catch fish and maybe the stars will align and we can get together. Take care

I reserved 3 days with the remote fishing thing! I cant wait! Thanks everyone for the ideas!! Go vikes!

Sounds like a great trip. I can not wait BRING ON THE ICE.

Sounds like the perfect set up, wouldn't expect anything less from Jonny P. I've got my weekend booked.

That sounds awesome, I am talking to buddies now, the big plus is we can take a car up, and save a ton of money in fuel over dragging a wheel house up, makes the rental fee easier to swallow.

I stayed twice last year in Upnorth houses with Justin, no complaints , had a blast, have another trip booked with them for this year!

Sounds like a great option. You can alwaysvtake the bar along with you if thats important. Plenty of ice out there. Not sure Jonny is as good looking as the waitresses though smile

Ya, sure. As if I am going to give the guy that has been lost on ice roads a dozen times a machine that will go anywhere. eek

Looks like a great option.

Arnesons has been taking this approach on LOW for years and it seems to work just great. A little different operation but not focusing on the roads just the fishing.

Good luck as I am sure it is quite an investment.

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

If you stop by Kramer lake on 38 north of Rapids someone made a chair out of a hospital commode and a lunch tray. Been there for 20 years.
