Anybody got a report for northlong? I only made it for a few hours last sunday late afternoon & only managed a pike...water temps were still pretty low.

What's with the 20+ boats on one little spot on 371 bay...obviously not a secret spot anymore?

Posted

I fished it last Saturday and Sunday as well. That "secret" spot wasn't too hot for us, but I watched some people catch a few. The water was a little warmer over in that area. I think it was around 52. The rest of the spots we fished were in the mid to upper 40's. Only managed to catch a few pike, crappies, and a bass for the whole weekend. We marked quite a few fish, but couldn't get much to bite. I'll give it a go again this weekend. I'm thinking I'll troll some raps if I can't catch em on live bait. Good luck.

the sunday on opener we did ok for crappies in merrifield on a spot by ourselves...this past weekend we tried it again on sunday and for 2.5 hrs of fishing we caught a perch!!! Poor to say the least...

One observation I had was the DNR was at the Merrifield access with the pressure washer and spraying down boats as they leave...wouldn't it make more sense to spray them down b4 they go in the lake to prevent invasives getting into the lake rather than leaving a lake that doesn't have alot of the popular invasives?

Ozzie my wife said the same thing!

That doesn't exactly make any sense.......I guess whatever they feel like doing is the right thing to do?

The DNR has no clue. The could not manage an aquarium.

Keep a eye on those DNR spraying guys they sprayed the license right off my brothers boat on Gull there out there to protect our waters even though they cant prove that the Zebs are a negative every lake they are in are top notch fisheries maybe they need to do more reasearch

we found willing biters in merrifield bay. we rigged shiners on light weights and shorter leader, slow slow slow. they were short biting all day and we missed more bites than we landed. they were in 15-16 feet early and late and moved out 19-24 during the day. the water was 45-46 degrees and leeches weren't getting bit. we fished hard friday and saturday and managed a decent fish fry saturday night, most fish were 15-16. put back several under 12 and a few over 20. pretty good weekend. checked the main lake for about an hour and one pike bite, bit me off.

Many anglers jump from one lake to the next,so it does help to clean at the site before leaving. also some of those spraying are DNR interns just hired so they are also on a learning curve.

They are not in many top notch fish lakes yet. True they are in some of the top notch walleye lakes because Some anglers are careless or just don't care.

That is why they are there.

Some anglers got to be baby-sitted to do the right thing. Maybe zebra mussels are negative to 80% of the lakes.

Another exotic mussel now found in leech lake is causing 1000's of ring-neck ducks to die each fall now.

I have no problem with them there laker1 but the thing is North Long doesn't have invasives is what they say but they don't spray as you go into the lake only after leaving the lake. if you are trying to prevent then you do it before and after to be closer to 100% no transfer.

Posted

Agree they should spray going in also, especially since like zebra mussels have not been found yet like you said.

I think lake associations from other lakes like Pelican group was complaining when boats came from other lakes not their lake(a little tongue and cheek)and were not sprayed before hand. They pushed for it.

It just a tough situation either way and only so much can be done.

agreed that they are in a no win situation but they still have to do things that make sense and not things that make us really scratch our heads. Have a good weekend!

I watched a guy 2 years ago start to back his boat in at the access on Big Trout & the DNR stopped him before he got it in because he had zebs on attached to his prop...sure would have been helpful if they had a spray station set up before hand & after since Big Trout is now infected.

Back to the original post: fished Merrifield Bay on tuesday night for 2 hours...we got a mixed bag of walleyes, a few pike & bass 6 fish total. Those new scatter raps are sweet!

Posted

central,

I bought a couple scatter raps as well but haven't tried them out yet. were you getting all fish biting on those or just certain types?

Posted

I had the perch color and my wife switched to same thing after I had 3 to her 1 on a firetiger and she caught a little bass on it. You can really feel it switch directions when you pump it and speed up etc.

Cant wait to throw them at em...I didn't get perch color yet so I might have to make another trip to the bait show

thanks

Trolled spinners and shad raps from 6:30-9:30 in 371 bay yesterday morning with nothing to show for it...went to Gull and caught some pike under slip bobber w/ minnow. Tried trolling for eyes there until dusk, and got skunked. Been out 4 times this year and yet and walleye to show for it.

I'm heading up to the lake this weekend. Our cabin is on the south side of the 371 bay. I haven't been up there since October. Not sure if I should bring up my small 8 X 8 wheel house and pull it on with a UTV, or just bring up the snowmobile with portables. Is there enough snow on the ice for the sled? Is there sufficient shoreline ice after the big thaw for a mid size Ranger and small perm? Thanks for the help.

There should be ample ice, I know more about Merrifield Bay. We did have about 2-3" of standing water as of Monday night. Then it cooled off a bit and snowed. We only got maybe an inch of snow in the area from that so you may want to think about that. Sorry I can't help more.

My 30 year-old Indy 500 (over 8,000 miles) has been having a mid-range bog for many years now.  It is worse on warm days and when the engine is warmer.  The sled runs fine up to about 1/4 throttle, then runs extremely rich up to 3/4 throttle.  The spark plugs are dark brown (better brown than down?) but not saturated.  8 years ago I moved the clips on the jet needles from the 3rd to the 2nd groove to lean the mixture and it helped for a while.   Should I move the clips to the top groove (temporary solution)? Could the jet needles, needle jets, and/or the main jets be warn and need replacement?   Don't think I will have time to tear the carbs apart this season for a rebuild so I may just band-aid the problem.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

I still have hope. Put me down for my dad's birthday in April 26. Come on warm weather.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

aw that date is fine and maybe someday we will have beer!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
