I'm trying to learn how to make a spear, and you've got some great info posted here. I do have one question. When you braze the two pieces together on the point, why doesn't it melt when you heat treat it? Most heat treating takes place a lot hotter than the brazing rod would melt at.

That depends entirely on the type of tool steel that you use. W1 tool steel is hardened at around 1500 degrees and brazing rod melts around 1700 or so, depending on the brand and actual alloy. Some steels certainly would not work due to the required higher hardening temperature. I hope this helps.
