Been unable to fish for three weeks! Hoping to catch a few panfish this weekend. Are there any roads lowed on Blue that I can get my wheelhouse out?

Posted

There is a narrow road, but there is a lot of slush where the lake has been plowed. Good Luck

Thanks fishergurl! Maybe I'll take a drive w/o the wheelhouse and check out a few places first.

After Baxter I checked out Blue and did catch some crappies and gills. Nothing overly big some around 8 mostly smaller. I met a fellow HSOer out there and tried from 6 feet to 20 feet and 17 seemed to be the best depth for us today. I also got a great tan on the lake or sunburn is what my wife calls it.

Went out there today, bite was ok. Bout the same as yesterday but the size wasn't as good. Wasn't out to keep anything so i was just happy the pole was bending and getting a kick out of the old timers watching me throw back a few good size bluegills. One thing that irritated me was a guy who was hole hopping like myself looked like he left a few fish by the holes he left and went a far ways away, which is fine, til i came up to see that one of those fish was a bass!!! So i did what anyone would do, i walked up to his fish made sure he was watching me and i threw the bass back into the water and shook my finger at him. lol. Guy kept his distance from me the rest of the evening. lol.

There has been a rash of bad behavior on Blue, just ask MonsterMoose, seems like a group of old timers need tip called on them IMHO

All this big guy can do is shake his head. We all need to do our part and turn these kind of people in. They makes us all look bad.

Yes there is walleyes in Blue, but they can be hard to find. If you are taking your son I would fish for crappies they will be easy to find.

he just throws his slow death hook out with a leech on it, he is always happy with anything that bites grin thx!

tough morning.....marked very few and what there was no bites. his go to setup produced nothing this am, even in the shallows, i was lost for words, it was a long 5 hours but he was happy to be in the boat nonetheless.

Anyone else been to Blue lately? I am heading there tomorrow night looking to see if the bite has picked up or if I should head somewhere else.

What are you looking to catch?

Anything we don't really care looking for crappies, I have a few "secret" spots in the early spring out there haha. Gonna go to Blue will let you guys know tomorrow how we do.

The crappies were in the shallows all of last week. The gills were shallow as well. I have heard some reports of walleyes coming from 4-8 feet on new growth weeds at sunset. I have heard the south bay where the inlet is has been kicking out some crappies and that is where I the walleye report came from as well.

Thanks very much for the tips! I will definitely be using those.

hoping to make it this weekend, any preferences (plastics or live bait) for this lake? son disappointed of the skunking 2 weeks ago

The bass have been liking crappie minnows on a flu flu jig. I would use a jig with a bigger hook makes hooking into them easier. I would check the south end of the lake for crappies and find the new weeds at sunset and after dark for the walleyes. Same depths have as I mentioned before seem to be good. I have heard of some crappeies and eyes coming from Green last night in 6-7 feet of water at sunset.

Good Luck and be safe!!

1 crappie in 2 hours this am from the south side (9-11 s.m.) dont think the timing did us any favors, saw plenty both on screen & visually from boat 5-8 FOW but no interest

Got out this morning and found 3 walleyes willing to bite. 1 26" and 2 15 inchers. Rain came at 10 am and got off the lake after the dummy's at the landing figures out how to back up a trailer and load a boat all while lightning was happening.

Blue is a nice lake and it has a good mix of fish to keep anglers busy.

Would like to take my girls summer fishing on Blue (just up the road). We usually winter fish it in the middle for craps.

I haven't summer fished Blue and would like to set the kids up bobber fishing for walleyes. I have no clue where to start!

I am reaching out hoping somebody can pm me with a clue or direction, I can (try to) figure out the rest! Thanks

Posted

I can honestly say I've never bobber fished for walleyes on blue. These fish relate to the weeds for their structure. I'd find a good weed line.

Posted

Tough to get 6&7yo girls to cast or troll for very long. So we usually set them up on bobbers.

Thanks for giving a little insight.

Thinking its time to grab the spud bar and go for a walk. Anyone tip toed out there yet???

Ice updates???

Posted

Was out there yesterday, stayed in the bay off the east access (the steep one) had 8.5" of ice every where I went, pretty much struck out on fish though, lots of perch every where I drilled a hole, from 3" up to about 7"ers nothing keepable.

I want to try the north bay of Blue, but I do not have a sled to make it through the narrows. Anyone ever try the north bay in the winter?

Posted

I always hit the south side, the hump, but thought of hitting the East bank on South side of narrows. Does the ice get thinner there? I didn't think that the narrows were that "narrow" to make dangerous ice at this time. We'll see.

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

If you stop by Kramer lake on 38 north of Rapids someone made a chair out of a hospital commode and a lunch tray. Been there for 20 years.
