I'm not losing hope yet eek, but this ice out isn't progressing as I had hoped shocked. Lots of "patchy" open water, leads that widen by the day, and most of the shoreline ice is gone where I have been checking. However, in a typical ice out, there should be more open water daily and I'm just not seeing it. Like I said, not losing hope, but things need to pick up a bit.

Good Fishing,

Starting to see a little ice movement. Little bits of ice piling up on points and islands. Not much but some so we know it is on its way out. Forecast is for some wind and thunderstorms. Should be navigable by Friday.

Also took a boat out tonight and drove up on the ice pak. Even though this ice is in the shade from the shore trees, we were able to break through it quite easily. If we would have gotten out to the unprotected stuff, I'm pretty sure we could have gone almost anywhere.

The East wind today blew the ice pack at the HooDoo Landing over to the West shore of the bay. There is still a good sized raft of ice between HooDoo and Whisky Island.

What are the chances Big Bay is ice free by Saturday from reading and looking at webcams not great. Sunday? Monday? Tuesday?

Greenwood still has some ice in the narrows. Some big leads between there and Fectos with about a 100 yard strip open from Fectos to Blackduck Island. Ice is piling on the west shores just about everywhere. 65 and East wind tomorrow then strong west winds on Friday. It should be gone in our area.

Not to much hope that Big Bay will be open on Sat. Maybe later in the week though.

Vermilion webcams looking promising, this a.m. open water East and West Pike bay and getting real dark and splotchy other areas. Yesterday's rain/wind helped and with more on way I bet we will be looking good on East Side (with the exception of big bay) for opener cool

NWS forecast:

Tonight Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 4am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4am. Low around 45. East wind around 5 mph becoming southeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 54. South wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

I put my boat in this afternoon just before the rain started. The docks are in at Hoodoo Point access. There was still large chunk of ice floating around from just northeast of Hoodoo point to Whiskey and over to Indian Island, it will be gone by tommorrow with this rain and wind. Nice to have the boat on the lift again!

Mr Flash:It has been a long long winter, I myself have not got the boat out of storage yet. Maybe Monday, will sit on the dock and fish until then. We will have to get together this summer for some fishing. Later and good luck on the opener. Darrell.

Got my boat in the water and onto the boat lift also this afternoon!

Very good to be on that water again!

If the weather permits I will be out tomorrow testing electronics etc. and trying to spot a few fish.

Can't wait for Saturday!

Niles Bay is still full of ice as of this afternoon. My boat is stuck in the boat house with no way to access it and who knows when the dock service can come in and lower my docks. Thus, no opener for me AGAIN this year!! My pipes are still frozen. And they still claim we have to spend billions to fight global warming! This sux. I'm not happy.

From the Timbuktu website...

THE UP NORTH UPDATE 5/9/14

Lake temps sit at a chilly 44 degrees today (much like the air temps!)

the ice is pretty well out for the most part! Someone took a ride from the Marina & reported they made it from the Dam to Moc. Pt. ! There was a float of ice between Grassy & Hinsdale at the end of Smarts Bay. Niles Bay had some slushy ice but it appeared you could drive right through it (same report for Frazier Bay)

I checked Stuntz Bay again this morning. The ice went out there last night! There is a slushy patch of ice about 10 yards wide at the landing but you can probably drive right through it. There was ice in the Stuntz Narrows but open water outside of that too.

McKinley was still iced in.

Pike Bay is wide open except for a few small icebergs west of HooDoo.

See ya on the water tomorrow!

I know quite a lot of you are waiting for a fishing report, but alas, you have to go fishing to write a report, and as of yet, I don't qualify. My wife and I took a tour of ice conditions this AM. We went from the end of Birch Point around to Mocassin Point with a couple of detours along the way. Ice is, for the most part "off" of Daisy Bay except for a HUGE raft that stretches from the Marina across 3/4 of the way to Daisy Bay Resort then east to ~1/4 mile from Banana. It is clear all the way to Birch Point along the north shore ~ 1/4 mile out. There is another raft of ice between Daisy Island(on the north) and the small islands just south of Gruben's. This area is very fishable IF you watch the wind . These rafts are moving around quite a lot and you could get blocked from a return route. I COULD NOT take my boat west to the Marina because of the huge raft of ice. Birch Point east is all ice!!!!!! It will be a few days before there is anything open that direction.

From Gruben's north, there is a big ice raft between the bridge and within 1/4 mile of the small island group directly east of Mocassin Point in the Dells. I saw a boat navigate around the tip of Pine Island and head north in that direction. It appeared to be clear, from what I could see, north of Mocassin Point.

The only two boats I saw fishing were in the far west end of Daisy Bay and in the 40' channel between Pig Island and Pine Island.

It's fishable in a few spring spots people, but, in my estimation, you're not missing much yet! Daily, these ice rafts will dissipate, and I'll feel more comfortable venturing into the areas where we'll concentrate our spring fishing efforts.

I'm going to go out later and give Banana a whirl. If it's worth writing about, I'll keep you posted. Yesterday, out from my docks, the water temp was 34.7 degrees!! eek Of course, when you're floating one giant ice cube in it, what would you expect?

Good Fishing,

MarkB smile

Fished birch island today 42 feet of water and caught keeper walleyes and big fat perch. Also caught a 3 pound eelpout. There were 2 guys ice fishing out there. No kidding . They pulled their boat up on the ice pack and sat down on chairs casting their lines out. Had to leave because the ice was shifting.

An update on my previous post: I took my little boat out this afternoon and went from my place on Birch Point all the way around past the portage and S curves to the north side of Pine Island. I assume it's open all the way to Glenwood and beyond perhaps. Frazier Bay appeared to be ice-free. Completely jammed up and impassable 1/4 mile from the end of Birch Point all the way east. I saw several boats fishing in all the spring spots with the biggest flotilla around the small islands in the Dells at the 40' hole.

I tried fishing for an hour or so, missed one and caught a really big jumbo. I didn't mark a lot of fish but plan on fishing more seriously tomorrow. Everywhere but Big Bay seems pretty much a go now. The coldest water I found was 37 degrees and the warmest was 43 degrees.

Good Fishing,

MarkB smile

Drove out to the end of Birch Point this evening to see how the ice is progressing. It appears that it's open from Moose Island east on a line from Moose Island to Jackrabbit Island. I cant see real good in the mist/low light but I wouldn't be surprised if it's totally open east of Moose. The needle ice that's left is backed up west down to Strawberry Island with a fairly wide open stretch along the south shoreline. I believe you would have no trouble going from Everett's Bay to the far west end of Big Bay. I also think a roundabout route could be taken on the outside of Moose Island to anywhere you would want to go west.

This should all be gone in the next couple of days or so.

Good Fishing,

MarkB smile

Hello Friends,

I had asked our dock company for some time frames on dropping our dock (Frazer / Smart's Bay area) and just as an fyi he indicated that many of the docks he has put in already he hasn't been able to put the decking on due to high water.

Again, just an fyi....

Guys

Planning on heading to pine right in front of Comet on Thursday will I be OK or will it still be ice covered?

You should be fine, west wind for the last 3 days so any ice still there should be on the other side of the bay.

On the South Shore...  It's deer hunting season in MN and not many are out fishing.  Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.   The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     No surprise, vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is the program for most anglers.  Anglers are going through a lot of frozen emerald shiners as the walleyes and saugers are all mixed sizes.  You will catch small ones and your eaters.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well.    Anglers are also reporting very good numbers of jumbo perch this fall.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      Good numbers of fish are staged in great spots for the upcoming ice fishing season. On the Rainy River...  Good numbers of shiners again in the river this past week. Typically, if there are shiners, there will be walleyes, and there definitely are.     Walleyes are coming from various spots from Four Mile Bay to Wheeler's Point, to Baudette all the way to Birchdale.  With so many anglers taking advantage of the deer hunting season, there are not a lot of boats on the river.      Walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.  The bait and consequently, walleyes, are moving around.  Once you find some fish, you will be rewarded. Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the way to go. Some anglers are also still trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  For those not in the woods hunting, fall fishing continues to be excellent.  It is areas with structure holding walleyes in this part of the lake.  Points, neck-down areas with current, shoreline breaks, and transition zones from rock to mud are all productive locations for walleye right now.     A nice mixed bag with perch, pike and crappies being caught as well. Good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

Yes.  No lightning strikes in the area on Saturday and a tree was burning.  The squirrel hunters have been a nuisance this year with more activity in our area then we have ever seen.  This was the 3rd fire in the section of woods in the past 2 weeks.  Most definitely not caused by natural events.

Stop, trying to make everybody feel bad that not in the woods!   😟  😆

Haha!  No… In other news: All the cell cams users that I talk with are seeing some daylight movement of adult bucks since yesterday.  No deer hunters want to be at work right now.

The water temps on the west end Friday were 45 in HeadOLakes and 44 in the smaller bays.
